3 Things the Fourth Avatar Movie Needs to Be About (Including Something Never Seen in the Franchise)

While the plot of Avatar 4 remains unknown, the next movie needs to focus on three key storylines following the events of Avatar: Fire and Ash. The third Avatar film received some criticism for feeling repetitive, and Avatar 4 has the opportunity to be a fresh and improved installment by developing these areas.

By the end of Avatar: Fire and Ash, Pandora remains largely unchanged. While the RDA’s plan to hunt the Tulkun has been stopped, the human corporation still controls a presence on the planet. Meanwhile, Colonel Quaritch has teamed up with the Ash People, but becomes disappointed with the RDA’s actions. The film concludes with him leaping from a high cliff, leaving his future uncertain and setting the stage for the next movie.

3) Avatar 4 Must Commit To Quaritch’s Redemption Arc

Colonel Quaritch is a surprisingly complex character in the Avatar movies, especially considering he started as a fairly simple, tough-guy Marine in the first film. Over the last two movies, he’s been struggling with who he is – a human from his past, or the Na’vi he’s become. In Fire and Ash, Jake tries to get Quaritch to understand Eywa and change his behavior, but Quaritch consistently refuses.

Quaritch’s story in Fire and Ash feels very similar to his arc in The Way of Water. He didn’t experience a true change of heart at the end of Fire and Ash; he simply shifted his hatred from the RDA to the Ash People, continuing to pursue Jake Sully. If he appears in Avatar 4, the movie needs to fully explore a path to his redemption, potentially with Jake Sully helping him to change for the better.

2) Neytiri’s Hatred Of Sky People Should Be Challenged

Neytiri’s dislike of humans has become much stronger throughout the two Avatar movies, leading her to even threaten her son, Spider, on several occasions. Zoe Saldaña, the actress who plays Neytiri, has described her character as being “racist,” highlighting the interesting contradiction of being married to a human in her Avatar form (according to a YouTube interview).

In Fire and Ash, Jake Sully highlights the contradiction in Neytiri’s strong dislike of the humans, but she doesn’t alter her views. She remains hostile towards them at the film’s conclusion, and the next Avatar movie should address this. Perhaps Spider directly confronting her, or even Colonel Quaritch finding redemption, could push Neytiri to rethink her beliefs and adopt a more complex perspective.

1) Avatar 4 Needs To Actually Show Earth

A major part of the Avatar story focuses on humans leaving a ruined Earth, but we still haven’t actually seen it. Avatar 4 should finally reveal Earth, showing the damage humans have inflicted. This would help viewers better understand why the RDA acts the way it does, and also emphasize how terrible their actions are by illustrating the full extent of the destruction they’ve caused.

For some time, plans have included a storyline where the Na’vi travel to Earth, and this might not happen until the fifth Avatar movie. Showing the people of Pandora experiencing Earth could create a compelling reason for the journey and hint at what’s to come in the final installment.
