January is shaping up to be a particularly great month for fans of the genre, offering a fantastic start to the year with several promising movies. All three of the sci-fi films mentioned will have theatrical releases, making them special events. Here are the films:
3. Mercy
The first film is Mercy, starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson. Pratt plays Detective Chris Raven, who stands accused of his wife’s murder. He’s put on trial before an A.I. judge – a system he actually helped create – played by Ferguson. Raven has just 90 minutes to prove he’s innocent, or he’ll be executed.
I’m so hyped for this new sci-fi thriller! It’s set in Los Angeles in 2029, and the premise is wild. You follow this guy, Chris, who’s trying to figure out who murdered his wife, but he’s literally chained to a chair while doing it! He has to use cameras and interview people to solve the case, but there’s this intense pressure because he can’t appear guilty. There’s a guilt meter that’s constantly changing, and if it hits 92%, it’s game over. It sounds absolutely gripping and I can’t wait to see how it all plays out!
2. Iron Lung
Iron Lung is a video game that turns a creepy science fiction horror story into an interactive experience. You play as a character piloting a submarine on a distant moon covered in an ocean of human blood. The mission? To find resources that could help humanity survive after a strange event called ‘The Quiet Rapture’ caused all the stars and habitable planets to disappear.
Iron Lung stands out with its original concept, and the upcoming sci-fi film is a true labor of love for Mark Fischbach, better known as the YouTuber Markiplier. He not only directed and co-wrote the movie, but he also stars in it! Expect a terrifying and gruesome experience – the film promises a level of dread rarely seen in science fiction.
1. World Breaker
Following the intense, confined experience of Iron Lung, World Breaker offers a very different kind of science fiction story. The film centers around terrifying creatures called “breakers” that emerge from a dimensional tear known as the “stitch.” These monsters can transform humans into hybrids with just a scratch or bite, leaving the surviving women to take the lead in the fight against them.
The movie World Breaker centers on Willa, played by Billie Boullet, and her father (Luke Evans) as they fight to survive in a monster-filled world. Directed by Brad Anderson, the sci-fi film also stars Milla Jovovich as Willa’s mother. January offers a diverse range of sci-fi films, with these three releases exploring different corners of the genre, promising an exciting month for fans.
