Frieren Season 2 Confirms Episode Count (And It Will Disappoint Fans)

The popular anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is back with new episodes as part of the Winter 2026 season. However, the second season will be shorter than the first. Frieren is already the biggest returning anime of the year, building on the success of its first season, which aired over two years. Unfortunately, the new season will only run for a few months.

The Blu-ray and DVD release details for Season 2 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End have been announced in Japan, confirming the new season will have ten episodes divided into three volumes. This is a shorter season than the first, and less than the typical twelve to thirteen episodes for a standard anime season. Fans will need to pay close attention to each episode as they are released over the coming months.

What Does This Mean for Frieren Season 2?

The second season of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End will have fewer episodes likely because the original manga is currently on break due to health issues with its creators, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. The manga has faced similar breaks in the past, so the animation studio, Madhouse, probably chose to adapt only a certain portion of the story to avoid having to pause production again while waiting for new chapters.

Season 2 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is carefully balancing its adaptation of the original manga, and may even be adding new content. The series prioritizes telling a compelling story and exploring its fantasy world over strict adherence to the source material. This gives the anime flexibility in choosing which parts of the story to include, and it doesn’t need to wait for more manga chapters to be released. This approach could be very successful, even with a shorter episode count.

How to Watch Frieren Season 2

Season 2 of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is currently being released as part of the Winter 2026 anime lineup. If you’re outside of Japan, you can watch it exclusively on Crunchyroll in Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, the Middle East, CIS, and India. An English dub is planned, but the release date hasn’t been announced yet. The same team and voice actors from the first season are returning for the new season.

Heading into the new season, there was a change in leadership as Keiichiro Saito didn’t return as director. He explained that Tomoya Kitagawa took over because he was impressed with Kitagawa’s skills and vision during the first season. Saito felt he needed help managing everything, and Kitagawa was the only person he trusted with the job, even assisting him during the production of Season 1.
