Gerard Butler is well-known for his action roles in films like 300 and Law Abiding Citizen, but he’s also taken on other types of movies. He first tried science fiction in 2002 with Reign of Fire, and later appeared in a 2017 sci-fi film that wasn’t successful, but is now available to watch for free online.
The movie Geostorm began streaming on Tubi for free on January 1st. Despite being a box office and critical disappointment, this sci-fi disaster film—the directorial debut of Dean Devlin—features Gerard Butler as Jake Lawson, a satellite designer who must prevent a catastrophic, weather-altering storm caused by faulty satellites. The film also stars Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris, and Andy García.
Geostorm Bombed in Multiple Ways
Chris Jenness of the Peninsula Clarion called Geostorm a “disaster of a disaster movie,” and that assessment was pretty accurate. The film failed on almost every level. While it earned $221 million at the box office – making it one of Gerard Butler’s most successful films after the How to Train Your Dragon series and 300 – that wasn’t enough to cover its $120 million production cost. Warner Bros. lost around $70 million on the project, and it received poor reviews from both critics and audiences.
With critic and audience scores of just 18% and 35% respectively, Geostorm is considered one of Dean Devlin’s least successful films. The movie attempted to combine a disaster story with political intrigue and espionage, but the result was a confusing and overcrowded plot. It suffered from underdeveloped characters, awkward dialogue, predictable disaster movie clichés, and numerous plot inconsistencies. Despite its large budget, the visual effects and disaster scenes appeared cheap and unconvincing, with noticeable errors in continuity.
Interestingly, Geostorm has become more popular over time. It’s found a new audience through streaming and is now considered a fun, unintentionally hilarious movie. After doing well on Netflix and HBO Max, Geostorm is currently the No. 6 most-watched film on Tubi in the U.S., alongside other favorites like Equalizer 2, Prey, Driving Miss Daisy, S.W.A.T., and The Burial.
What’s New on Tubi?
Tubi continues to expand its free streaming library, and January brought a fresh batch of popular movies. Viewers can now enjoy titles like The Cabin in the Woods, Jumanji, Love Lies Bleeding, Mulholland Drive, and Pulp Fiction, all added to Tubi at the beginning of the month.
