2025’s biggest blockbuster may have surprised some viewers: Ryan Coogler’s Sinners. Starring Michael B. Jordan, the film offered a new spin on the classic vampire story, telling the unique tale of twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, who return to Mississippi hoping for a fresh start, only to find themselves caught up in something far more dangerous than they anticipated. It’s a truly impressive movie, and for many, it brought to mind another film celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.
Released on January 19, 1996, From Dusk till Dawn didn’t receive great reviews at first, but it became a box office hit and launched a whole franchise. It’s become a very influential vampire film – and director Ryan Coogler has cited it as an inspiration for his work on Sinners. Interestingly, while Robert Rodriguez directed the film, Quentin Tarantino wrote it and also acted in it, making it a potentially overlooked gem in his career.
From Dusk till Dawn Is a Crime Caper Wrapped in Vampire Horror
From Dusk till Dawn centers on brothers Seth and Richie Gecko, played by George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino, who are on the run after a bank robbery. They take a family hostage to help them escape to Mexico, but their troubles don’t end at the border. They find themselves cornered in a club filled with vampires, a threat far more dangerous than the police. The film also features Harvey Keitel, Juliette Lewis, Ernest Liu, and Salma Hayek. What starts as a crime thriller takes a surprising turn into horror, with a particularly intense and memorable second half. Once the vampires appear, the film becomes incredibly violent and action-packed, creating a morally ambiguous story where it’s hard to tell who to root for. While Seth and Richie are far from heroic, the vampires are truly monstrous themselves.
There are clear parallels between From Dusk till Dawn and Sinners. Like the characters Seth and Richie, Smoke and Stack both have shady pasts and are trying to leave that life behind – though they’re returning home for a fresh start instead of fleeing to Mexico. Both films also feature a climactic vampire confrontation in a nightclub, with the threat coming to Smoke and Stack’s bar. The stakes are equally high in both movies, centering on a desperate fight for survival until sunrise.
Despite sharing a theme of brotherhood, the films From Dusk till Dawn and Sinners differ significantly. Sinners offers a more complex portrayal of its criminals, Smoke and Stack, presenting them as sympathetic characters driven to crime by poverty and racism in the early 1900s – it was how they survived and hoped for a better future. In contrast, the brothers in From Dusk till Dawn are primarily motivated by greed. This added depth makes Sinners more emotionally engaging, and consequently, the film’s violent scenes are particularly shocking and impactful.
Unlike some of his more complex work, From Dusk till Dawn is a direct, action-packed horror film, and that’s what makes it so good. Though it wasn’t initially considered one of Tarantino’s best scripts, it’s gained a lot of respect – and a dedicated fanbase – over time. It delivers what fans now expect from Tarantino, but it also takes a bold risk by unexpectedly introducing vampires midway through the story, and it works brilliantly. The film was successful, leading to a prequel, a sequel, a video game, and even a television series.
From Dusk till Dawn is available to stream on Pluto TV.
