Since 2009, the Paranormal Activity films have been scaring viewers with their distinctive found-footage style. The series started with low budgets but became very successful, leading to several sequels that introduced elements like witches, cults, and even trips to other dimensions in 3D. The latest film, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, premiered on Paramount+ in 2021, and hopes to revitalize a franchise that had begun to lose its creative spark.
After a lot of anticipation, Paramount has announced the release date for the next Paranormal Activity movie: May 21, 2027. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio seems confident this new installment will revitalize the franchise, scheduling its release during the peak summer movie season.
Last month, Blumhouse revealed that James Wan, known for directing films like The Conjuring and Saw, is producing a new Paranormal Activity movie. Ian Tuason, who will be making his feature film directorial debut with the 2025 release Undertone, is directing. While specific details are still being kept secret, with Wan’s involvement and Paramount planning a major summer release, fans have good reason to be excited about the next installment in this popular horror series.
Can a “Rebirth” Resurrect the ‘Paranormal Activity’ Franchise?

Universal
Paranormal Activity faced an uphill battle to get into cinemas, needing to prove itself through test screenings. Initially, audiences found it so frightening that some walked out, which worried producers. However, they quickly realized the problem wasn’t the film’s quality—it was simply too scary! This led to a hugely successful viral marketing campaign, transforming the low-budget ($15,000) movie into a massive horror franchise. The first film alone earned an impressive $194 million worldwide.
The story continued with several sequels, and even a prequel set in the 1980s that continued the found-footage style. Some additions to the backstory, like the focus on witches, were successful, but others, such as 2015’s Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension – which revealed the demon and introduced dimensional portals – didn’t work well. The most recent film, Next of Kin, wasn’t the lowest point for the series, but it made it clear that the franchise needed a reboot to regain its momentum.

The upcoming Paranormal Activity film is being described as a fresh start, but it might not completely break from the existing story. A true reboot would be the simplest way to revitalize the franchise and potentially bring it back to its former box-office success. With James Wan’s involvement generating buzz, Paramount’s announcement of a release date demonstrates their confidence in the found-footage series, and we can expect to learn more exciting details leading up to its 2027 debut.
