The Straw Hat Pirates are fan favorites in One Piece, accompanying Luffy on his quest to become the Pirate King. As they pursue their own dreams, they also become Luffy’s most trusted and valuable companions. Through all the challenges they face together, their friendships become incredibly strong. Luffy carefully chose each crew member, and some didn’t even plan on joining him at first! But thanks to Luffy’s personality and determination, they eventually joined the crew and became beloved characters in their own right.
Luffy’s initial encounters with his crew vary greatly – some are funny, others are sad. But no matter the circumstances, these first meetings are always unforgettable.
9) Luffy Saves Zoro From The Marines

Zoro, a skilled bounty hunter, wasn’t looking to join Luffy’s crew at all. But after finding himself in a difficult situation, he reluctantly agreed, unaware it would be the best choice he ever made. Luffy sensed Zoro wasn’t the villain everyone claimed and wanted someone with his courage and strength on his team. Their first encounter was full of funny and wild moments, but Luffy quickly convinced Zoro to become his first mate.
8) Luffy and Nami Form an Unlikely Alliance

Nami’s first appearance was already pretty wild – she was a thief targeting pirates! Things got even more complicated when she met Luffy and tricked him into teaming up with her. He didn’t realize she was planning to use him all along. It wasn’t until later that Nami finally joined the Straw Hat Pirates as their navigator.
7) Luffy Immediately Liked Usopp

Luffy met Usopp purely by chance when he first arrived in Syrup Village. They quickly became friends thanks to Usopp’s friendly nature and his connection to Yasopp, a sniper on Shanks’ ship. But Usopp didn’t actually join the crew until after the battle in the village, as he was determined to finally achieve his dream.
6) Sanji Couldn’t Get Rid of Luffy

Luffy is incredibly determined, and he wouldn’t take no for an answer when it came to Sanji joining his crew. He admired Sanji’s amazing cooking, but even more, he valued his kind heart and knew Sanji was the perfect chef for his future pirate ship. Sanji repeatedly refused, wanting to stay loyal to Zeff, the man who raised and mentored him, but secretly he longed to pursue his own ambitions too.
5) Luffy Almost Ate Chopper

Luffy’s meeting with Chopper is definitely one of his funniest experiences with the crew. After a grueling climb up Drum Mountain carrying Sanji and Nami, Luffy was incredibly hungry. When he spotted a reindeer, Chopper, with Sanji eager to cook it, a chaotic chase began. Luffy nearly ate Chopper, but thankfully, they managed to avoid turning the reindeer into a meal.
4) Robin Always Wanted to Help The Crew

Even though Robin worked closely with Crocodile, helping him with his plans, she didn’t share his desire for chaos. She pretended to kill Igaram and even encountered Luffy and his crew, but her goal wasn’t to harm them. Instead, she wanted to guide them to Alabasta as quickly and safely as possible. Later, deeply touched by Luffy’s strong will and genuine kindness, she asked to join his crew after dismantling Baroque Works.
3) Franky Was Luffy’s Enemy First

Franky was a bit of an outsider in Water 7, leading a group known as the Franky Family. They made a living by taking apart ships and doing some shady work. This led him to target Usopp, who had money with him. When Usopp was attacked, Luffy and the rest of the crew were furious and came to his rescue. Although Luffy and Franky initially clashed, Franky quickly became an ally and helped the crew during the events at Enies Lobby.
2) Luffy Didn’t Hesitate to Recruit Brook

Everyone was shocked, but Luffy was insistent that Brook join his pirate crew. He was thrilled to meet a skeleton who could talk, make people laugh, and even sing! Brook happily agreed to join, but didn’t officially become a crew member until after they defeated Gecko Moria.
1) Jinbe Looked Out For Luffy Since The Beginning

Jinbe was a friend to Luffy even before Luffy realized it. While Ace asked Jinbe to look after Luffy, Jinbe only fully committed when he saw how strong and determined Luffy truly was. They first met in the Impel Down prison, where Luffy was desperately trying to rescue Ace. Jinbe helped Luffy find Ace and, after being freed himself, joined the fight alongside him.
