The very first companion to appear in Doctor Who believes the BBC has a responsibility to its audience to keep the show going, especially after recent conversations about its future now that its agreement with Disney has ended.
Carole Ann Ford, who recently returned as Susan Foreman in the newest season of Doctor Who with Ncuti Gatwa, has spoken highly of how dedicated the show’s fans are.
The BBC either made the show or found someone else to, because there’s a strong fanbase and it would be a shame to lose that. I believe they have a responsibility to the fans to continue making it and keep it alive.
Despite the end of the agreement with Disney, the BBC seems very dedicated to continuing Doctor Who. Kate Phillips, the BBC’s chief content officer, has reassured fans that the show will go on, and it’s now confirmed that Russell T Davies will be writing a new Christmas special this year.
During the conversation, Ford reminisced about her earliest experiences with Doctor Who, recalling filming the very first episode, “An Unearthly Child,” which first aired in 1963.
Looking back, she said, something about that moment truly solidified Susan’s place in her heart. Oddly, seeing the TARDIS in the junkyard felt like coming home. She’d become very familiar with it by then, knowing it was Susan’s home. When she looked at it, she didn’t see the exterior, but rather the much larger space inside.
She also remembered how she and her co-star, the late William Hartnell—who played the original Doctor—used to create their characters’ histories themselves. This happened because the scripts didn’t always provide enough detail.
So, I was chatting with Bill, and we came up with a theory about the TARDIS. We figured it wasn’t the newest version – more like an older model that had been spruced up. And honestly, those improvements weren’t exactly running perfectly. It was a bit clunky, if you want to know the truth!
My grandfather, Bill, was working in a massive hangar filled with countless TARDISes. He was busy repairing and improving one when an alien invasion suddenly began.
Everything was chaotic, and he quickly pulled me into the TARDIS, announcing we were leaving immediately. We ended up with a TARDIS that wasn’t fully functional – he kept trying to fix it throughout our adventures – and we ultimately landed on Totter’s Lane.
