Even though Lobo isn’t the main character in the new Supergirl movie, his appearance is highly anticipated. Jason Momoa, known for his role in Aquaman, will play Lobo in a supporting role, while Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl (Kara Zor-El).
Although Jason Momoa was already known for his work in the DC Extended Universe, many fans were surprised by his new role in the rebooted DC Universe. However, he’d been interested in playing Lobo for quite a while, and recently shared that he actually prefers the character’s complex, morally gray nature to playing a traditional hero.
Jason Momoa expressed his excitement, saying, “He’s amazing,” and revealed that playing Lobo is a lifelong dream. He shared (via DCU Prime TV on X) that he wanted the role even more than Aquaman, and feels this is the perfect opportunity. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn previously mentioned that Momoa began campaigning for the part as soon as Gunn was appointed to lead the franchise.
As soon as I found out I got the job, Jason Momoa texted me immediately,” Gunn explained. “It was just ‘Lobo, baby!’ in all caps, with a ton of exclamation points.” Peter Safran, my producing partner and co-CEO, agreed, saying, “Jason Momoa is a perfect fit – he is Lobo in real life!”
Jason Momoa has consistently expressed his enthusiasm for playing Lobo since he was first considered for the role. He believes he’s a perfect fit, saying, “I just think I’m the right person to play the role.” He’s even joked about being typecast, stating, “If we’re going to typecast me in anything, let’s put me in Lobo!” He loves the character’s traits – the motorcycles, cigars, partying, dreadlocks, and willingness to fight – and thinks Lobo is a funny character.
Last year, Jason Momoa told Ebaster that landing the role of Lobo is a dream come true. He explained that he’s a longtime fan of the comic book character and feels a bit anxious but excited to take on the part, calling it a natural fit. Currently, Momoa is confirmed to play Lobo in Supergirl, and he’s open to reprising the role in future DC Universe projects.
Safran has spoken highly of Jason Momoa, which suggests a positive future for him within the DC Universe. Safran noted that Momoa wasn’t just asked to play Lobo – he actively wanted the role, which is exactly the kind of enthusiasm they look for in actors.
Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
