‘Welcome to Derry’ Just Retconned 1 Loser’s Club Scene from 2017’s IT Movie

The series Welcome to Derry changed some details about the Black Spot, a location first introduced in the 2017 film IT: Chapter One. Welcome to Derry introduced the idea of an “Augury,” which is a particularly violent period in Pennywise’s feeding cycle where he kills many victims. In the 1962 cycle depicted in the series, the Augury was the burning of the Black Spot nightclub by a racist group, resulting in the deaths of several innocent Black people. While Welcome to Derry primarily explains the true nature of the Black Spot, IT: Chapter One presented a different historical understanding of the location.

The novel IT: Welcome to Derry revisits the Black Spot from IT: Chapter One and clarifies its nature. It reveals that the location wasn’t actually a nightclub, but a repurposed storage building occasionally used as a gathering place by the Black community.

General Frank Shaw, already targeted because he opposed Pennywise, allowed Dick Hallorann and his team to use this location as a safe haven. This was also a reward for their assistance in helping the military combat the long-standing evil in Derry.

In the Welcome to Derry series, the Losers’ Club went to the Black Spot, which briefly served as a hiding place for Hank Grogan, one of the fathers whose children were targeted by Pennywise.

This was also where the children experienced a new sense of independence – they were allowed to try Air Force Coke for the first time.

Both Welcome to Derry and IT: Chapter One explored the Black Spot, a significant location connected to Pennywise. Welcome to Derry developed it as a memorable place, while IT: Chapter One briefly showed its destruction, linking it to the town’s history of evil and underlying racism.

Pennywise haunted Mike Hanlon by creating terrifying hallucinations – visions of burning arms struggling within the flames of the Black Spot. Ben, one of their group, discovered historical records showing the Black Spot was actually a different building that was destroyed by fire in 1962.

Some viewers might see this as a change to established story details, especially considering what was shown in Welcome to Derry. However, it’s important to remember that the prequel didn’t exist when the first movie came out, so this quick shot could have just been a temporary visual used during production.

The Black Spot Retcon Has a Deeper Meaning Than Fans Think

The new explanation for the Black Spot in the recent Welcome to Derry series goes further than many viewers realize. It’s possible Pennywise altered the imagery surrounding the location to conceal its true history.

The seventh episode showed Pennywise deliberately targeting and killing several Black individuals, coinciding with the burning of the Black Spot. He also revealed his terrifying true form, the Deadlights, to psychologically torment Ingrid Kersh, essentially exposing his existence.

There’s no proof photos were taken during the Black Spot event, suggesting Pennywise might have altered the image Ben saw. This could have been done to show Derry’s troubled past, all stemming from this ancient evil.
