Blue Beetle was released near the end of the previous DC movie universe, but it’s unique because the character will continue in the new DC Universe. Xolo Maridueña is expected to return as Jaime Reyes, although the timing isn’t confirmed. Ideally, a sequel would be directed by the first film’s director, Angel Manuel Soto, who is hoping for a Blue Beetle 2 and would like to see Booster Gold join the cast.
ComicBook recently spoke with director Angel Soto about his new film, The Wrecking Crew, starring Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa. During the interview, they asked about a potential sequel to Blue Beetle. Soto expressed hope that they’ll be able to continue the story, noting the first film ended on a cliffhanger, making Blue Beetle 2 a possibility. He also shared which character he’d love to see team up with Blue Beetle: Booster Gold. Soto believes the pairing would create a really fun and interesting dynamic.
Although Soto would be thrilled to make a live-action follow-up, he’s equally enthusiastic about an animated series, believing it would allow for greater creative freedom. He particularly likes the idea of exploring the adventures of different families in animated form, and as a big anime fan, feels animation isn’t limited by realistic constraints. He’s open to pushing boundaries with an anime-inspired style. He’s excited about the possibility of an animated series and eager to get started. You can find the complete interview here.
Blue Beetle Is One Of The Few To Move From The DCEU To The DCU

The DC Universe has moved on from the previous DCEU, with many roles being recast and characters reimagined. However, a few elements are carrying over, including the characters from Blue Beetle, Amanda Waller, and the Peacemaker team. While Peacemaker has served as a key link to the new universe so far, even that show has seen changes, like the altered Justice League scene from its first season.
John Cena is returning as Peacemaker, but Jason Momoa is taking on a new DC character – Lobo – instead of Aquaman. He’ll first appear in the upcoming Supergirl project. Fans will likely first see the new version of Blue Beetle in an animated series, with Xolo Maridueña reprising his role and excited to continue as the character.
“It’s amazing to be the one and only Blue Beetle,” Maridueña shared with Hablemos de Cine. “Continuing Jaime’s story is a real honor, and I’m incredibly excited to see what happens next. I have a feeling it’s going to be absolutely wild, almost like watching an anime!”
Blue Beetle fits seamlessly into the new DC Universe being built by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Because the first Blue Beetle movie was already somewhat separate from the previous DC films, its story elements can easily be incorporated into the ongoing narrative without major adjustments. We’re hoping to learn more about how Blue Beetle will officially join the new universe soon.
The Wrecking Crew launches on Prime Video on January 28th.
