Ariana Grande Gets Real About Catching Flak For Supposedly Not Being ‘Committed’ To Acting

Ariana Grande first became famous as a pop singer, with hits like “7 Rings” and “God Is a Woman” earning her two Grammy Awards. More recently, in 2025, she received an Oscar nomination for her funny and charming performance as Glinda in Wicked, and continued to impress in Wicked: For Good. While she shifted her focus to acting, not everyone supported the change, and Grande has spoken about the criticism and doubts she faced regarding her dedication to the craft.

Ariana Grande has faced criticism throughout her career, ever since she began performing as a child. It’s easy to overlook that she first became known on Nickelodeon shows like Victorious and Sam & Cat. Some critics seemed to imply that her success as a singer shouldn’t qualify her for the role of Glinda in the upcoming Wicked movie. Grande recently told Variety that she actively tries to ignore this negativity, explaining that

I actively work to create emotional distance to protect myself from further pain. From the start, I realized I needed to do this because there was a lot of negativity and doubt surrounding my casting – people questioned whether I was capable or the right fit. But I had a significant responsibility, and I needed to block out the criticism and concentrate on the task at hand. I had rightfully earned this opportunity and was determined to give it my all.

Ariana Grande has talked about how much work went into landing the role of Glinda. The audition process was very challenging, requiring her to sing four famous songs from Wicked repeatedly. She also fully immersed herself in the character, gathering pink outfits and even thinking about details like what Glinda would wear as underwear.

Ariana Grande dedicated herself to shedding her pop star image and fully becoming the character of Glinda, and she’s pleased with how it turned out. She went on to say:

I feel good about the choices I’ve made and the work I do. As an artist, I’m deeply dedicated to my craft, so it’s upsetting when people doubt that. To cope with that, I choose to focus on the positive support I receive. I cherish the genuine connections I make with people – the moments that really move me and the stories I’ll always remember. I don’t take those experiences lightly. I’m proud of who I am as an artist, but it’s not always easy.

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have both gotten visibly emotional, and it’s easy to see why. Their descriptions of the heartfelt stories their characters experience, the film’s special moments, and the bonds they made with their fellow actors are incredibly moving.

The movie Wicked received two Academy Awards out of ten nominations, and its sequel, Wicked: For Good, is expected to earn even more nominations when they are announced on January 22nd. Stay tuned to TopMob for complete coverage!

Ariana Grande is continuing to prioritize acting. She’s joined the cast of Focker In-Law, jokingly saying it was more physically demanding than filming Wicked. The film, the fourth installment in the Meet the Parents series starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, is scheduled to be released on November 25, 2026.
