With just one month left before Marvel’s legendary family, consisting of Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm/Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm/Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm/the Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) make their grand debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios has unveiled the complete trailer for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Directed by Matt Shakman, this upcoming film, set to hit theaters on July 25, finds the quartet of inventors facing off against the cosmic menace Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his interstellar ally, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), who portends impending doom in the newly released two-and-a-half-minute clip.
In an era evoking the 1960s with its blend of vintage style and futuristic flair, reminiscent of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s iconic comics, Marvel’s reinvention of Fantastic Four unfolds in a different universe. Here, the Future Foundation has been instrumental in shaping our modern marvels, while the Fantastic Four stand as the world’s most esteemed and powerful superheroes.
As a devoted admirer, I’ve previously encountered characters like Mole Man (Paul Walter Hauser), the ruler of the subterranean realm of Subterranea, and the Red Ghost (John Malkovich), a Russian space explorer who was affected by the same cosmic radiation that granted the Fantastic Four their extraordinary abilities. However, the family I follow is about to face our toughest test yet when Galactus, an imposing cosmic entity, sets his sights on Earth, specifically for Reed and Sue’s son – the prodigious Franklin Richards.
Amidst the action of the four characters springing into motion – Invisible Woman creates a shield, Human Torch ignites, the Thing delivers blows, and Reed expands both physically and mentally – we catch glimpses of Galactus towering over Earth, H.E.R.B.I.E., the robot companion, receiving a friendly punch from someone (voiced by Matthew Wood from Star Wars), and Ben navigating the turbulent skies above New York City in the Fantasti-Car. Oh my, this trailer is packed with excitement! Catch it in the player above.
Apart from Lee and Kirby, who teamed up to create iconic characters like Silver Surfer, Galactus, Uatu the Watcher, Black Panther, the Skrulls, and Doctor Doom in Marvel Comics, Shakman drew inspiration for their work from the groundbreaking runs of John Byrne on Fantastic Four, Jonathan Hickman’s influential Fantastic Four series (which launched the Future Foundation), FF, storylines penned by Mark Waid with art by Mike Wieringo, and the current comic writer Ryan North.
Above all, “First Steps” draws heavily on the classic optimism, reminiscent of the time period that gave birth to the modern Marvel Universe in 1961.
At its core, “First Steps” is deeply influenced by the vintage optimism which sparked the creation of the comic that ushered in the contemporary Marvel Universe in 1961.
In Shakman’s words during Marvel Studios’ San Diego Comic-Con presentation last year, the ’60s aren’t just about aesthetic appeal, but rather an era filled with optimism. It symbolizes gazing at the stars and harboring dreams of space travel. It embodies the belief that if you have a strong heart and mind, there are no limits to what you can achieve – a sentiment perfectly encapsulated by the Fantastic Four.
The movie “Marvel Studios Presents: The Fantastic Four – Initial Strides” hits theaters on July 25th, and you can purchase your tickets right now!
