The HBO series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, debuted on January 18, 2026, introducing viewers to Ser Duncan the Tall, played by Peter Claffey. Dunk is a young, relatively unknown knight who begins the story by burying his mentor and contemplating his future after the warrior’s death.
Having abandoned the ideas of selling his horses or joining the city guard, Dunk decides to compete in a jousting tournament at Ashford Meadow. As he steels himself, gripping the sword of his former teacher, the famous theme music from Game of Thrones, composed by Ramin Djawadi, begins to play.
Honestly, I was bracing for the episode to end, but then A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms threw me for a loop. Instead of a dramatic finish, we got… Dunk taking care of business behind a tree. It was a completely unexpected moment, and the fan reactions have been priceless – seriously, people are losing it, and in the best way possible. It’s a bold move, and it absolutely works.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) jokingly called it “diabolical” that the show immediately jumped into a scene of a character using the bathroom by a tree, skipping any introduction to the moment.

Honestly, as a big fan of Game of Thrones, I was right there with someone who wondered why we needed to see that particular scene. They put it perfectly: did we really need to witness…well, that? It just felt unnecessary, you know?
George R.R. Martin recently told The Hollywood Reporter he was also surprised by the bathroom scene in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. He admitted seeing the initial cut led him to question it – “What is this? Where did this come from? Do we really need this?” – but showrunner Ira Parker decided to keep it in.
