Andy Muschietti, the director of both It and It Chapter Two, has hinted that a third movie in the series could happen. The films, based on Stephen King’s popular horror novel, were huge box office successes and recently inspired a TV series on HBO. Even though the two movies already covered the entire story from the book, fans have been hoping for more, and their wishes might come true.
Director Andy Muschietti recently announced plans for a longer, combined version of both It and It Chapter Two. During an interview while promoting It: Welcome to Derry, Muschietti and his partner, Barbara Muschietti, shared their hope to release this “super cut,” which will include additional scenes that haven’t been filmed yet. They also mentioned that Stephen King knows about the project and supports it.
Andy Muschietti: “[A] supercut is something that’s coming, and we’ll see how this series does…”
About a month ago, I was thinking about how the supercut was progressing, and Stephen King actually asked me how it was going.
Andy is excited to combine the two films into one cohesive story. He’s planning to restructure it and include additional scenes, some of which he still needs to film. These new scenes will help connect the existing parts of the story and create a smoother flow.
Barbara: “But we don’t have time, that’s the problem.”
Andy: “But I think there’s interest. I think the studio is interested in funding it. We’ll see.”
Seven years have passed since It Chapter Two concluded the saga of Pennywise and the Losers Club in Derry. Although fans requested a combined version of both movies, the Muschietti brothers pursued other projects, including a return to the It universe with It: Welcome to Derry. This new series will be a prequel, showing what happened when Pennywise was active in Derry during earlier time periods.

One interesting detail from the interview is that the planned supercut won’t just be existing footage – it sounds like they’ll be filming new scenes. This could even mean bringing back actors from the first or second It movies, as we recently saw happen with It: Welcome to Derry. While it’s not the full third movie many fans wanted, this combined cut, with added scenes, could offer a fresh way to enjoy Stephen King’s story.
Andy and Barbara Muschiettis are still passionate about Stephen King’s stories, and there’s a possibility of combining the two It movies into one longer cut. They’re also hoping to continue the Welcome to Derry series if it gets picked up for another season. Now, it’s up to the studio to approve these plans.
An IT Supercut Is More Likely Than Ever
I’m still holding out hope for that extended cut of It combining both chapters, and it sounds like directors Andy and Barbara Muschiettis are too! They’ve definitely expressed interest in making it happen, but it all hinges on whether the studio gives them the green light and if they can actually fit it into their schedules. Fingers crossed!
The director said they’ll need to see how well the show Welcome to Derry does before planning any future It projects. Since it quickly became one of HBO’s most popular series launches ever—second only to The Last of Us and House of the Dragon—it’s clear the show was a hit, and it proves there’s still a huge demand for stories based on It.
Warner Bros. and HBO had a positive experience with Zack Snyder’s extended version of Justice League – a four-hour film with added and restored footage from the original 2017 movie. Although it was a gamble, the Snyder Cut proved successful, and a similar extended version for the IT franchise could also do well.
With the massive success of the It movies in theaters and strong viewership of It: Welcome to Derry on streaming, now is an ideal moment to create a supercut of the franchise to capitalize on current fan interest.
