The GameShark, a popular cheat device for consoles, is making a return. If you were a gamer in the 90s or 2000s, you probably remember plugging a GameShark into your system. It sat between the console and the game, allowing players to modify gameplay – sometimes to improve the experience, and other times to simply cheat. It was hugely successful, generating over $650 million in sales and being enjoyed by more than 15 million players, and now it’s making a comeback in a new form.
Todd Hays, the creator of the popular GameShark device, started a Kickstarter campaign on January 20, 2026, to celebrate its legacy. He announced the project a day earlier with a press release, explaining that he wasn’t planning to create a new GameShark for today’s consoles. Instead, he’s publishing a book called The Complete Cheatcode Compendium with Gamepro. Along with the book, Hays is also developing new hardware and a digital platform featuring a vast collection of cheat codes, walkthroughs, and strategy guides from decades of gaming history.
GameShark Is Back With a Beautiful Compendium and Online Platform

As a huge retro gaming fan, I’m really excited about this project called the Compendium. It’s basically a deep dive into how people conquered those incredibly difficult classic games – not just through skill, but also by using things like the GameShark. It’s amazing because the creators aren’t just documenting gaming history; they’re actively preserving it. What’s even cooler is that the money they’re raising isn’t for the book itself! It’s going towards building the RetroShark – a brand new GameShark device, and the first one in almost 20 years! It’s a fantastic way to both celebrate and play the classics.
The RetroShark is a new device aimed at today’s gamers, offering a way to enhance their experience without making games too easy or ruining what makes them special. While details are still limited, it’s expected to be a powerful piece of gaming technology, building on the legacy of the original GameShark. The project, currently on Kickstarter, focuses on celebrating the fun players had using cheat codes and enhancements, and it’s likely to be successfully funded.
The Kickstarter campaign just launched and is already close to its $10,000 goal, having raised over $6,400! As a retro gaming fan, I immediately pledged $49 for the Launch Day Special, and you can still get in on that deal if you act fast. There are other options available for $59, $99, and $119, offering different perks. Even a $1 pledge helps support this classic gaming system and the developers’ vision – it’s a great way to show your appreciation for a system that brought so much joy to gamers.
