For years, the world of Star Wars has featured interesting characters, and the story has always moved forward, focusing on different heroes. But recently, Star Wars has fallen into a pattern of storytelling that seems hard to break. This change in direction started about five or six years ago.
With a sprawling franchise like Star Wars, it’s easy to want all the movies and shows to connect as much as possible. While some projects do this more than others, there’s usually a sense that everything is part of one big, continuous story. The original Star Wars films and the prequels told their stories in a straightforward order, making returning characters feel natural. But things changed with the Disney era, particularly after a memorable episode of The Mandalorian in December 2020, which seemed to disrupt that consistent approach.
Luke Skywalker’s Surprise Cameo in ‘The Mandalorian’ Changed the Show Forever

When The Mandalorian debuted with the launch of Disney+ in 2019, it felt like a welcome change for Star Wars fans. The final film in the often-criticized sequel trilogy had just been released, and many viewers were losing interest in the Skywalker family’s story. They were eager for something new within the Star Wars universe—fresh characters and storylines—and The Mandalorian seemed to deliver exactly that.
The Disney+ series initially presented itself as a genuine part of the Star Wars story, but it largely stood alone. You didn’t need to know anything about Star Wars beforehand to enjoy it, and The Mandalorian seemed like a separate, self-contained story that wouldn’t connect to the main events of the films. However, Luke Skywalker’s appearance in the Season 2 finale changed everything.
That moment felt specifically designed for longtime Star Wars fans, and that wouldn’t have been an issue if The Mandalorian hadn’t already been building its own unique identity. While Temuera Morrison’s Boba Fett appearing could be compared to Luke Skywalker’s cameo, the fact that Boba is also a Mandalorian created a genuine connection with Din Djarin. Luke’s return, though thrilling, wasn’t essential. It’s understandable that Grogu’s Force abilities needed to be developed, but the show could have explored that without bringing in such a prominent figure like Luke Skywalker and overshadowing the story.
‘The Mandalorian’s Unexpected Use of Luke Skywalker Affected the Entire ‘Star Wars’ Franchise Going Forward

Disney+
Luke Skywalker’s appearance in The Mandalorian was a genuinely exciting moment, catching almost everyone off guard. It showed us a part of his story we hadn’t seen before within the current Star Wars films and series. However, the show had initially led viewers to believe it would exist independently from the main Skywalker family storyline. The cameo was so well-received that fans started anticipating similar surprise appearances in every Star Wars show, and for the most part, Star Wars has been giving them just that.
The introduction of Cad Bane in The Book of Boba Fett, while connected to the main story, felt like an unnecessary attempt to wrap up plot threads from The Clone Wars. It highlights a tricky situation: when Star Wars shows focus solely on their central characters and stories, fans often criticize them for not referencing the wider universe. Andor and Skeleton Crew are prime examples of projects that have faced this criticism.
Recent Behind-The-Scenes Developments Suggest This ‘Star Wars’ Cameo Trend Isn’t Going Anywhere

Disney+
For those following the leadership of the Star Wars franchise, a recent change has occurred. Dave Filoni is now in charge, replacing Kathleen Kennedy who served as president of Lucasfilm since 2012. Filoni has long been a major creative force within Star Wars, even before Disney acquired it, and this new position gives him even greater authority. Many fans are optimistic about this change, praising Filoni’s consistent focus on what fans want. Kennedy’s leadership, on the other hand, often faced criticism for prioritizing business concerns over fan preferences.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I’ve always appreciated Dave Filoni’s passion for the universe, especially the characters and stories he’s built himself. But that passion sometimes leads him to connect things in surprising—and maybe a little contrived—ways. Think about Luke Skywalker showing up in The Mandalorian – that felt a bit out of the blue! Now that he’s running Lucasfilm, I’m a little worried we’ll see even more crossovers, driven by what fans think they want rather than what organically serves the story. I’m really hoping the future Star Wars projects don’t become all about endless cameos, and that if they do lean into that, it still feels good and doesn’t get old. Only time will tell if it works!
