Lost JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Movie Shares Surprising Update

I’m so hyped for 2026! Netflix is finally bringing Steel Ball Run to life, and as a huge JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fan, this is massive. It’s the story of Johnny Joestar and his incredible journey, and it’s always been considered one of the best arcs in the whole series. But while we’re looking forward to the future, there’s some sad news about the past. The director of a potential Phantom Blood movie, Junichi Hayama, just shared an update that isn’t what fans were hoping for, unfortunately.

Studio A.P.P.P. created a movie adaptation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood, the first of three versions to tell the story of Jonathan Joestar and Dio Brando. Released in Japan for a short time in 2007, the film’s future re-release is uncertain. According to a recent interview with Hayama, the original creators weren’t satisfied with the final result. The movie was shown in theaters briefly, but they weren’t able to fix some issues before the release. Despite these unaddressed corrections, the decision was made to release it anyway.

Hayama detailed the situation with the missing JoJo footage. They decided to fix it for the DVD and Blu-ray release, and even received input from Mr. Araki, leading to revised storyboards. They were waiting for Shueisha to give the go-ahead, but never heard back. Then, unexpectedly, Shueisha said they would handle all remaining corrections and requested all the production materials – storyboards, animation cels, everything related to the fixes. They assured Hayama they would make everything presentable, but after handing everything over, they received no further communication and never saw the materials again.

Junichi Hayama is a highly respected figure in the anime industry, known for directing and animating many popular series. Throughout his career, he’s contributed to iconic titles like Berserk, Fist of the North Star, Big O, Mobile Suit Gundam, Lupin the 3rd, One Piece, and Pokémon, among countless others. Although there’s no news yet about a potential JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure film, fans are hopeful that the franchise’s continued success will make it happen.

I’m really excited for the return of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to anime this spring! What’s amazing is that the manga is still going strong with Hirohiko Araki at the helm. After Steel Ball Run, we got JoJolion, and now new chapters of The JOJOLands are being released. It might take a while before these newer stories get adapted into animation, but I have a feeling it will be worth the wait.
