Star Trek 4’s Cancellation Gives the Reboot Crew an Unwanted Movie Record After TOS & TNG

The Star Trek franchise got a much-needed boost in 2009 with J.J. Abrams’ reboot, which was a critical and commercial success, earning $385.7 million worldwide. This paved the way for a sequel, but the series began to lose steam. Star Trek Into Darkness made $467.3 million but proved controversial with fans due to uninspired decisions. While Star Trek Beyond better captured the feel of the original series, it didn’t perform as well at the box office.

Following the release of Star Trek Beyond, Paramount spent almost ten years attempting to create a fourth film in that storyline. The project went through several directors and faced numerous obstacles before the studio ultimately cancelled it. After the merger between Paramount and Skydance, a new Star Trek movie was announced, but it will be a fresh start with a new cast. This decision effectively ended the Kelvin Timeline series, marking an unfortunate chapter in Star Trek film history.

The Kelvin Timeline Cast Broke an Unwanted Star Trek Franchise Record

Because Paramount has changed direction, the actors from the Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies will only appear in three films – the fewest of any cast in the franchise’s history. The original series cast starred in six movies, and the cast of The Next Generation appeared in four. It seemed for a time like the Kelvin Timeline actors might equal The Next Generation, but that didn’t happen. Interestingly, this group was the first Star Trek cast created specifically for movies; the other two casts originally appeared on television before making films.

Imagine a reality where the actors from the newer Star Trek films were competing with the original cast for the title of greatest crew ever. Unfortunately, the films didn’t receive enough enthusiastic support, which ultimately led to the series stalling. If Star Trek Beyond had been a bigger success in theaters, Paramount would have likely rushed to make another movie. We might have even seen Star Trek 4 and Star Trek 5 released by now. Instead, the studio probably hesitated, wondering if another film would be a worthwhile investment. Star Trek Beyond unfortunately came out at a time when Disney was successfully reviving Star Wars and the Marvel movies were at their most popular. From a business standpoint, it was difficult to justify making another Star Trek film when the series was having trouble attracting an audience.

While the Kelvin Timeline films still have many fans, it makes sense that Paramount is choosing a new path for Star Trek. It’s been over ten years since the last Star Trek movie, and with new leadership at Paramount, this next film is meant to be a complete reboot of the series. The studio hopes to excite existing fans, but also attract a new audience to keep Star Trek popular for years to come. Starting fresh with a new cast is a more effective way to do that than trying to revive a group of actors who first appeared over fifteen years ago.

While the next Star Trek movie hasn’t announced its cast yet, it will be fascinating to see how long this particular crew stays together. Paramount is clearly making Star Trek a key focus, and that’s reflected in their recent decisions. The film will be directed and written by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, the team behind popular movies like Game Night and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. They have a great talent for making big, fun blockbusters, making them an excellent choice for this project. Hopefully, this new Star Trek cast will have a long and successful run, just like those who came before them.
