God of War TV Series Casts A Character Fans Weren’t Expecting Until Season 2

After over two decades of success in gaming, God of War is coming to television. Amazon’s Prime Video has ordered several seasons of a live-action series based on the popular Norse mythology games, with Ryan Hurst cast as the main character, Kratos. While it was expected that Kratos would be the first casting announcement, it’s been unusual to see who else has been cast. Instead of revealing the actors playing key characters like Atreus, Mimir, and Freya, Amazon has focused on casting characters who don’t appear until the second game, God of War Ragnarok.

Following the recent casting of Teresa Palmer as Sif, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have announced Max Parker will play Heimdall. Heimdall, a powerful god and one of Odin’s sons who acts as Asgard’s watchman, can foresee future events. The character is described as both handsome and ambitious, feeling overlooked by his father and siblings, which drives him to seek more power and recognition within Asgard’s hierarchy.

God of War Season 1 Will Incorporate Elements of Both Norse Games

Because Heimdall doesn’t show up until the game God of War Ragnarok, many viewers might not expect to see him until the second season of the Prime Video series. However, the recent announcement of Sif’s casting suggests the show won’t directly follow the 2018 game’s story. This makes sense, as adapting a game to television allows for more flexibility. Unlike the games, where you experience the story entirely through Kratos and Atreus, the show can explore other storylines and characters, broadening the scope of the narrative.

As a huge fan of the God of War saga, I’m really excited about the TV series, and it sounds like they’re doing something smart. They’re bringing in characters like Sif and Heimdall early on, which is great because the Norse mythology is so rich – we need to get to know these gods! The fact that they have two seasons to work with is a big advantage. Remember how some people felt Ragnarok rushed things a little? Like the story could have benefited from being a bit longer? It makes total sense why the developers at Santa Monica Studio didn’t want to spend years on one story, but the show seems to be fixing that. They’re taking the time to really build up these characters and relationships, which will make that final showdown with Odin’s forces even more epic. Honestly, it sounds like they’re learning from the games and giving the story the breathing room it deserves.

Including ideas from Ragnarok in the first season is a clever way to keep things interesting for fans of the games. Instead of simply retelling the story of the first game – which was already very cinematic – longtime God of War players can expect some unexpected twists. This is a good thing, as it will keep them engaged and eager to see what happens next. While it’s a risk to change a story as popular as God of War 2018, other video game adaptations have successfully taken similar creative liberties – like the episode featuring Bill and Frank in Season 1 of The Last of Us. There’s every reason to believe God of War can do the same.

Heimdall could be a particularly memorable character in the God of War series. Based on the games, Richard Blake’s performance will likely be very different from Idris Elba’s portrayal in the Marvel movies. This version of Heimdall is set up to be a villain audiences will enjoy disliking, characterized by his arrogance and self-assurance. Blake will likely have a lot of fun with the role, and it will be interesting to see how he interacts with the rest of the cast. While we might not see him with Kratos and Atreus until Season 2, Season 1 should give us a good preview of what to expect.
