James Gunn’s Superman revitalizes the character after the previous DC films, blending familiar elements with a fresh approach. The movie embraces Superman’s classic optimism and comic book origins, amplifying them while also making smart updates to connect with today’s viewers. It effectively addresses and resolves a long-standing, problematic cliché associated with the character.
The movie Superman begins after Clark Kent publicly intervenes in an international crisis, leading to widespread criticism and mockery. This negative reaction is actually a carefully orchestrated plan by Lex Luthor, who wants to make the world distrust Superman. Superman must then join forces with the Justice League to stop Luthor, while Lois Lane and her colleagues at the Daily Planet investigate and expose his scheme.
Superman Doesn’t Save Lois Lane In The DCU Movie
The way this Superman movie handles Lois Lane is a major improvement. Unlike many other versions, it avoids the tired trope of Lois simply being a character Superman needs to rescue. She’s no longer just a plot device for villains to exploit through her relationship with Superman. This new take allows Superman to remain vulnerable while still portraying Lois as a strong, independent character.
I was really glad they used Krypto in this movie! Instead of putting Lois Lane in the typical ‘damsel in distress’ role, they had Lex Luthor kidnap Krypto early on. It gave Superman a strong motivation throughout the film – saving his best friend! And it wasn’t just about rescuing him, either. Krypto actually helped Superman defeat the bad guys in the end, which was fantastic. Honestly, it felt like a much more balanced and empowering storyline than we often see with Lois, where she can sometimes fall into those tired, old stereotypes.
Lois Lane plays a significantly larger and more proactive role in Superman’s adventures. She often takes the lead, especially when the Daily Planet team investigates Lex Luthor’s actions in Boravia. The story really highlights her skills as a journalist, allowing her character to truly shine and reach her full potential.
Notably, Superman subverts the typical “Clark rescues Lois” trope by having Lois be the one to save Clark. When Clark gets trapped in another dimension, Lois takes the lead in finding him. She then assembles the Justice League to rescue him, essentially turning Clark into the person who needs saving. This really highlights how capable Lois is, showing she can stand strong even surrounded by powerful beings and creatures.
