Marvel fans were somewhat surprised to learn that Marvel Studios was creating a Disney+ series around the character Wonder Man. While it wasn’t illogical – he hadn’t been featured in the Marvel Cinematic Universe yet (and was even removed from a cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) – Wonder Man is unique because he has a civilian job as an actor. This announcement raised concerns among fans, as he was one of the last significant Avengers characters from the comics who hadn’t been adapted for screen, leading some to worry he might not become an official Avenger in the MCU.
The new Marvel series, Wonder Man, arrives on Disney+ next week with all episodes available at once. It kicks off Marvel Studios’ 2026 releases, which will culminate with Avengers: Doomsday in December. While it’s uncertain if Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s character will be in that film, the show’s creators have hinted that Simon Williams could potentially join the Avengers someday, depending on how things unfold.
Wonder Man Writer Reveals How Character Can Join The Avengers
In an interview with Comic Book about the Wonder Man series, head writer Andrew Guest discussed the possibility of Simon Williams joining the Avengers. Given the uncertainty of whether Marvel Studios originally planned for him to be part of the larger MCU or remain within his own show (currently labeled as “Marvel Spotlight”), Guest explained how that crossover could happen. He shared that Marvel is being flexible and keeping all options open.
Marvel seems to be letting each project succeed or fail on its own merits. If audiences enjoy a character, they’ll find ways to bring them back. We saw this with Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3; many thought he was a one-time character, but Destin Daniel Cretton brought him into Shang-Chi and explored a new side of him. I’m hoping the same happens with Simon Williams – that people connect with him and we can continue to use the character in future projects.
Whether Wonder Man joins the Avengers depends on two things: first, if audiences enjoy his upcoming show and connect with the character, and second, if Marvel’s creative team comes up with a compelling plan for him. Interestingly, after the mixed reaction to Trevor Slattery in Iron Man 3, nobody predicted Ben Kingsley would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, let alone become a recurring character.
Wonder Man is probably going to be well-received by Marvel fans, particularly with the growing excitement around Doomsday. This highlights how a strong concept can secure a character’s place in the MCU’s future. With almost a year until Doomsday releases and Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon, it seems inevitable that this classic Avenger will eventually join the team.
