The movie The Marvels didn’t perform well in theaters, earning around $200 million worldwide but costing $300 million to make. This was a surprising result, especially considering Captain Marvel made over $1.1 billion with a $175 million budget just four years earlier. Several factors were blamed for the difference. Some pointed to audience fatigue with superhero movies, while others felt the marketing campaign was ineffective. However, many believed the biggest issue was that Marvel had released too much content, including several shows on Disney+ (WandaVision and Ms. Marvel came before The Marvels). If there was one main reason for the film’s failure, it was likely due to this oversaturation. It’s also worth noting that director Nia DaCosta shouldn’t be blamed; some felt Disney CEO Bob Iger was unfairly shifting responsibility while avoiding criticism of the male directors behind other recent underperforming films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Despite some creative limitations, director DaCosta delivered a fun and lively Marvel film, successfully building on her recent success with 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Even viewers unfamiliar with the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel can easily enjoy the movie, as its core idea – the exciting ability to swap locations while using powers – is established quickly and effectively. The film stands on its own, making prior knowledge unnecessary.
What Makes the First Fight Scene of The Marvels Such a Delight?
At the start of The Marvels, we meet Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), the new leader of the Kree, who obtains one of the Quantum Bands – powerful devices needed to control a network for instant teleportation across the universe. This creates two portals, and Carol Danvers and Monica Rambeau each investigate one. Kamala Khan already possesses the other Quantum Band, which explains why their powers cause them to switch places. The movie quickly explains this connection, but the basic idea is clear.
We quickly understand the danger of the situation thanks to an action-packed scene just fifteen minutes in. It shows how risky it is to unexpectedly find yourself in a strange place, battling enemies – whether you have superpowers or not.
When Danvers unleashes her abilities on two Kree soldiers, Khan is instantly transported to the scene. Luckily, Goose the Flerken is nearby and uses his tentacles to attack the soldiers, providing the movie’s most humorous moment and startling Khan. Khan then uses her own powers, and Rambeau arrives soon after.
Everything unfolds quickly, leading into a fast-paced action sequence that jumps between Khan’s house, the S.A.B.E.R. space station, and the Kree ship. Despite the speed, the action is clearly presented, so you won’t miss any of the hits or changes in scenery, all set to the energetic track “Ratata” by Skrillex, Missy Elliott, and Mr. Oizo.
Amidst all the action, a couple of key details emerge. We see Danvers exchange words with a Kree soldier, who refers to her as “the Annihilator.” She clearly dislikes being called that, hinting at the real meaning behind the name.
Right before the battle, we see Captain Marvel, Khan, flying towards Nick Fury. However, it’s during the fight itself that they really start to team up and connect. You could consider it Khan’s first unofficial mission as an Avenger – a high-pressure trial by fire.
The fight also has some surprisingly fun moments. Like when Rambeau quickly punches a Kree soldier and then casually falls back onto a chair in Monica’s house – it’s a smooth move. But even better is what happens right after: Goose the Flerken swallows an entire ottoman to protect Rambeau from an incoming attack.
The fight scenes feel like a frantic, fast-paced dance as the characters constantly change positions. Despite being skilled fighters, they’re repeatedly surprised by their opponents. This sequence is remarkably well-done, and it surpasses all the action from previous Marvel projects like Captain Marvel, WandaVision, and Ms. Marvel combined.
