HBO’s fantasy series starring Matt Smith is proving to be a hit with viewers worldwide after a new show within the same world premiered. As A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—a series set between Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon—debuted on Sunday, House of the Dragon is now experiencing a surge in popularity on streaming platforms.
Data from FlixPatrol shows that House of the Dragon is a top 10 hit on HBO Max in 16 countries. In the United States, it currently ranks as the fifth most-watched show on the platform.
It’s hard to say for sure, but there appears to be a link between the premiere of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and a rise in viewers for House of the Dragon. House of the Dragon wasn’t being watched much—understandably, since it hadn’t released a new episode since August 2024—but that changed after A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms debuted on Sunday.
After A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premiered, House of the Dragon started appearing on viewership charts again and has remained consistently popular. This suggests that people watching A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are also discovering or revisiting House of the Dragon.
Matt Smith Stars In House of the Dragon, the First Game of Thrones Spinoff Series
Daemon Targaryen is a central figure in House of the Dragon. As the younger brother of King Viserys I, he’s a restless spirit who deeply desires the throne. After Viserys’ death, Daemon becomes heavily involved in the Targaryen civil war – known as the “Dance with Dragons” – especially after marrying his niece, Princess Rhaenyra.
HBO launched House of the Dragon as the first spin-off from its popular series, Game of Thrones, to see if it could build a successful franchise. The show proved to be a hit with critics, earning a 90% approval rating for its first season and 84% for its second on Rotten Tomatoes.
The show’s success is particularly significant for HBO because combining viewership from HBO and HBO Max resulted in a new record for single-day viewing of any TV show. This explains why HBO quickly decided to renew it for a second season.
With the success of House of the Dragon demonstrating that George R.R. Martin’s world can support multiple TV shows beyond the original Game of Thrones, HBO isn’t stopping there. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been picked up for another season, and several other Game of Thrones spin-offs are currently being developed.
Besides House of the Dragon, several other Game of Thrones projects are reportedly being developed. These include an animated series, a prequel set even earlier in the timeline that could become a movie, and a sequel series continuing the story after the events of the original show.
