Sam Raimi Offers Definitive Spider-Man 4 Update 4 Years After Marvel Reunion

Four years after directing a Marvel superhero film again, Sam Raimi has given a clear answer about whether Spider-Man 4 will happen.

Sam Raimi, best known for creating Evil Dead, directed the popular Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire in the early 2000s, long before Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He initially planned a fourth film featuring villains like the Vulture and Mysterio, but creative differences and delays led him to leave the project. Sony then decided to restart the series with a new cast, beginning with The Amazing Spider-Man starring Andrew Garfield.

After Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire both worked with Marvel Studios again – Raimi on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home – fans hoped their previously canceled fourth Spider-Man movie might still be made. However, in a recent interview with ScreenRant, Raimi has confirmed that Spider-Man 4 will not be happening.

The director started by sharing his ongoing affection for the Spider-Man series and the people who create it, and he complimented Marvel Studios on their current success, especially after working on the Doctor Strange sequel. He then explained that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man and Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson are now on a separate path, as the storylines featuring Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland’s Spider-Men have continued independently, outside of what we see on screen.

Raimi explained that with a new artist taking over the franchise in Holland and deeply engaging audiences with the character’s story, it wouldn’t feel right for him to revisit his own interpretation. He feels good about handing the story over to someone new and is proud to have been involved with such a great character and its rich comic book background.

Stan Lee was a brilliant creator, but the Spider-Man stories were a collaborative effort from a team of writers and artists at Marvel. After 40 years of comics, I had the opportunity to continue the series for a while, and then after my three films, I passed it on to another creator. It’s important that they continue to develop the story and connect with the existing fanbase.

The return of Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: No Way Home was a major surprise in 2021, especially considering how many leaks there were about both his and Andrew Garfield’s involvement. Maguire had been taking a break from acting, so he wasn’t in the public eye as much, but Garfield famously had to deny his return in several interviews.

After No Way Home confirmed that the universes of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men still exist, fans have been eager for Spider-Man 4. Mattson Tomlin, the writer for The Batman: Part II, has actively sought the opportunity to write the script, and Kirsten Dunst and Thomas Hayden Church (Sandman from Spider-Man 3) have both said they’d love to reprise their roles. Maguire has also indicated he’s interested in continuing as his Spider-Man, and there’s speculation he’ll appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.

The main obstacle to getting Spider-Man 4 made seems to be Sam Raimi. While he’s expressed interest in future collaborations with Marvel Studios after directing Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he’s also been hesitant about revisiting the canceled fourth Spider-Man film. He’s previously stated he hadn’t discussed it with Marvel or Columbia, and wasn’t sure if it was even a good idea to pursue.

It appears Sam Raimi has decided against directing Spider-Man 4, seemingly prioritizing Tom Holland’s continued role over bringing Tobey Maguire back. However, with the ongoing Multiverse Saga in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the Spider-Verse films connecting to both Raimi’s and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies, there are still chances for those earlier Spider-Men to appear in future films.
