Hilary Duff’s daughter doesn’t quite understand her mom’s metamorphosis in A Cinderella Story.

I recently had the fun experience of revisiting some of my favorite roles – you know, looking back at scenes from movies and TV shows I’ve done over the years. It was especially sweet to re-watch A Cinderella Story and my character, Sam Montgomery! It’s amazing how things stay with you, and it brought back so many great memories.

Hilary says her daughter, Mae, immediately asked the question fans have been wondering about ever since the popular romantic comedy came out in 2004.

She was talking about the Halloween dance episode where Sam goes dressed as Cinderella with a mask. This completely confuses her online friend and crush, Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), and sets off a search to discover the identity of his mysterious admirer.

In a video published by Vanity Fair on January 20th, she shared that her four-year-old had seen the movie and asked, ‘How could you not realize it was you under the mask?’

Because of this, people have often been curious about why something as basic as an eye mask could so easily distract him—and it seems Hilary’s daughter is one of those wondering too.

Hilary playfully responded, ‘It’s the classic question, isn’t it?’ Then, the other person said, confused, ‘But you’re right there! How could he not realize?’ Hilary simply replied, ‘I do know.’

Mae’s response to the film happened a year after Hilary shared that her younger daughter and older sister Banks, age 7 (who Hilary shares with Matthew Koma), hadn’t watched it yet.

In a December 2024 interview with TopMob News, actress Hilary Duff said her children aren’t particularly interested in her work, even though they love her as a mom. She has two children: 20-month-old daughter Townes with Matthew, and 13-year-old son Luca with her ex-husband, Mike Comrie. She hopes they might appreciate her projects more as they get older.
