A legal thriller originally released in 2025 has become a global hit after finding a new audience on Netflix. The movie joins a growing collection of legal dramas on the streaming service, alongside popular original films like Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile and The Trial of the Chicago 7, both of which are based on true stories.
The Indian legal drama Haq is based on the real-life case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum. This case was significant in 1980s India because the Supreme Court ruled that a Muslim woman who was divorced by her husband under Islamic law was entitled to financial support.

The film has sparked controversy because the filmmakers didn’t consult Shah Bano’s daughter, even though she understands the legal issues – specifically, the conflict between Islamic and government law – portrayed in the movie.
