Skyscraper Live challenge delayed by Netflix as new date announced

Okay, so the documentary about Alex Honnold’s insane skyscraper climb in Asia that Netflix was making? It’s been pushed back a bit. They’ve finally announced when we’ll actually get to see it, though, which is good news for those of us who’ve been waiting!

The live event, originally planned for Friday night, January 23rd, has been moved to Saturday night because of rainy weather in Taipei.

A US climber will attempt to scale the 1,677-foot Taipei 101 skyscraper without ropes or safety equipment, and the climb will be broadcast live on Saturday at 8 PM Eastern Time (1 PM GMT).

Netflix had to cancel tonight’s SkyscraperLIVE event because of bad weather, a spokesperson announced just half an hour before it was scheduled to start.

The event has been moved to Saturday, January 24th at 8 PM Eastern Time or 5 PM Pacific Time. Your safety is most important to us, and we thank you for your patience.

Completed in 2004 in Taipei, Taiwan, the 101 skyscraper is a towering landmark made of steel, glass, and concrete. It’s one of the world’s tallest buildings and gets its name from its 101 floors.

For many years, the 101 skyscraper held the title of the world’s tallest building. It remained the tallest until the Burj Khalifa was built in Dubai in 2010.

Alex Honnold is known for the acclaimed documentary Free Solo, which followed his incredible, ropeless ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite National Park in 2017.

He has said that scaling the building was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse.

When asked about taking on the challenge from Netflix, he simply said, “Why not?” He chose Taipei 101 because he considers it an amazing and incredible building. He also pointed out that, unlike many skyscrapers, it’s actually climbable and perfectly suited for the task.

He explained that since getting permission to climb buildings is difficult, and he had it, he felt he needed to do it. He described it as a rare opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
