Okay, so I was really digging Primitive War – that Aussie sci-fi horror flick with the Vietnam vets battling dinosaurs. And guess what? The filmmakers just announced they’re already making a sequel! Primitive War 2 is going to pick up right where the first one left off, continuing that crazy premise with more action and, you know, dinosaurs. I’m definitely excited to see where they take it!
Despite being made with a very small budget, the film Primitive War has received surprisingly positive reviews and audience scores. It currently has a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and an 86% score on the Popcornmeter, indicating that both critics and viewers found it entertaining and visually impressive, especially considering its reported budget of under $10 million.
Many viewers found Primitive War more enjoyable than Jurassic World Rebirth in 2025. Despite never getting a broad release, horror fans quickly turned it into a cult hit, praising its intense violence and genuinely frightening dinosaur creations. Good news for fans – early information suggests the sequel will be even more thrilling than the first film.
Director Luke Sparke Promises An Even Darker Sequel
According to Variety, a sequel to Primitive War is officially being made. Development is already underway, and they’re aiming for a 2027 release. Luke Sparke, the director of the first film – who also handled editing, production design, and visual effects – has hinted at what fans can expect from the new installment.
According to Sparke, the first movie focused on initial discovery. This new film explores what happens when things spiral out of control – when nature evolves quicker than military strategies, and when the consequences of the conflict become more important than the war itself.
The new film is a more intense and grim follow-up to Primitive War, which featured dinosaurs brought to the Vietnam War through a failed Russian experiment and a wormhole. Unlike the Jurassic Park movies, this story didn’t shy away from showing the dinosaurs’ violent kills in graphic detail.
The next installment will delve into even more intense and frightening territory, following a new group of American soldiers as they fight to survive in the chaotic valley where the dinosaurs originally appeared. Primitive War 2 aims to be a more realistic and gritty sequel, delivering the heightened action fans want while staying true to the spirit of the first film.
Primitive War’s Horror Elements Are What Make The Franchise So Exciting
Although Primitive War isn’t really trying to compete with the Jurassic Park movies – they have different goals and Jurassic Park had a much bigger budget – people naturally started comparing them when the latest Jurassic Park film came out in the same year as Primitive War. The main difference is that Primitive War’s dinosaur action is far more violent and intentionally exaggerated.
Primitive War doesn’t just show the horrors of war; it focuses on the terrifying reality of escaping relentless, dangerous dinosaurs with no guaranteed survival. In this franchise, anyone can die, making each violent scene incredibly intense. Moments like being clawed open by a deinonychus or torn apart by a giant quetzalcoatlus are genuinely frightening, and that’s what originally drew horror fans to the series.
It’s still unclear how much of the original Ethan Pettus novels will make it into Primitive War 2, but fans of horror should be happy with whatever direction the filmmaker chooses. A more intense, darker take on the sci-fi horror action would be a thrilling next step for the series.
