These days, many major movies are released directly to streaming services. In the past, a “direct-to-video” release meant a film wasn’t worth watching. However, streaming services have found their niches, and Netflix, in particular, excels at producing action movies with sizable budgets and well-known actors. Here are five original Netflix action films that are not only good, but so enjoyable you’ll likely want to watch them again.
We immediately excluded some clear misses, like Bright, The Outsider, and Polar. We also left out films that were just okay, including Spenser Confidential, Coffee & Kareem, Project Power, 6 Underground, Kate (even though Mary Elizabeth Winstead did her best), Red Notice, and Army of the Dead.
5) The Old Guard

While The Old Guard is praised for its imaginative world, its strongest point is how well-developed its characters are. The film truly captures the emotional toll of living forever and how it has shaped who they are over centuries.
The movie also features quick, exciting fight scenes that are still easy to understand. It’s similar to films like Atomic Blonde and clearly influenced the John Wick series. While some movies have done this style of action better (Violent Night), many others have done it much worse – including Love Hurts and the follow-up to this film.
4) Triple Frontier

Okay, so if you’re planning on checking out The Rip, you really should also watch Triple Frontier on Netflix. It’s got Ben Affleck in it, and honestly, it’s a great, gritty action flick. Plus, the cast is amazing – you’ve got Oscar Isaac, Pedro Pascal, Charlie Hunnam, and Garrett Hedlund alongside Affleck. It’s a similar vibe, a lot of tough guys in a tense situation.
Similar to The Rip, this film is essentially a heist story, but the consequences feel even more significant. It quickly becomes clear that no character is guaranteed to survive.
3) Carry-On

Carry-On is a fast-paced action thriller, and Taron Egerton delivers a fantastic performance as the lead. Jason Bateman, known for his role in Arrested Development, surprisingly shines as the villain – a departure from his typically good-natured characters.
This movie is genuinely thrilling, especially because it’s set in an airport. It’s fast-paced and actually surpasses another well-regarded action film set in an airport: Die Hard 2.
2) Rebel Ridge

While Rebel Ridge might not be the movie you’ll want to watch over and over again, it’s definitely the strongest film on this list. It expertly builds suspense, and because it feels so realistic, the tension is even more impactful than in movies like Carry-On or those with incredibly heroic characters.
Aaron Pierre, who will soon be in the movie Lanterns, is the heart of Rebel Ridge. The film carefully shows us who he is – an ex-Marine with good intentions, simply trying to help his cousin out of jail. But because he’s Black and this is happening in Louisiana, things quickly become complicated. What makes Rebel Ridge so good is its deliberate pace; the action feels realistic and genuinely suspenseful. While the supporting cast – including AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman from The Office, Emory Cohen, and Don Johnson – are all strong, the movie truly shines thanks to Pierre’s compelling performance and the excellent script by director Jeremy Saulnier.
1) Extraction & Extraction 2

Both Extraction and its sequel are enjoyable and worth watching multiple times, unlike The Old Guard. The Russo brothers, Joe and Anthony (who previously wrote Ciudad, the basis for Extraction), often collaborate with actors they’ve worked with in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Thankfully, this movie is a fast-paced, exciting experience – much more like the enjoyable The Gray Man than the rather dull 21 Bridges or the slow-moving The Electric State. Chris Hemsworth delivers a great and convincing performance as Tyler Rake, the action sequences are impressively done, and both films boast beautiful visuals, particularly in the second one.
