Adam Sandler has had a successful partnership with Netflix for over ten years. This proved to be a great decision for the actor, as it’s become harder for moderately-budgeted comedies to succeed in theaters. Streaming has become the perfect platform for Sandler’s films. Since teaming up with Netflix, he’s created popular movies like Murder Mystery and Hubie Halloween. His latest film, released in 2025, is already one of Netflix’s biggest hits and could mark a new, exciting phase in his career.
Netflix recently published its viewing data for July through December of 2025. The sequel Happy Gilmore 2, released in late July, was the second most popular movie with 135 million views. It came in behind the animated hit Kpop Demon Hunters, which was viewed 482 million times. These were the only two Netflix films to reach over 100 million views during that period, and Happy Gilmore 2 was the clear winner among sequels.
After Happy Gilmore 2, Netflix Could Look to Make More Adam Sandler Sequels

Let’s be honest, comedy sequels rarely live up to the hype – Hollywood’s littered with disappointments. But Netflix actually pulled it off with Happy Gilmore 2. It wasn’t a critical masterpiece, scoring around 62% on Rotten Tomatoes, but people loved it. The huge numbers watching the film clearly show there’s still a big appetite for Adam Sandler’s brand of comedy, and frankly, I see no reason why Netflix and Sandler shouldn’t keep making these movies together. It’s a winning formula!
The success of Happy Gilmore 2 is largely due to fans’ love for the original, which many consider to be one of Adam Sandler’s best movies. The film’s strong performance could encourage Netflix to create sequels for other popular Sandler classics, building on the same nostalgic appeal. Director Kyle Newacheck has expressed interest in making a sequel to Little Nicky, and after proving his ability to deliver a successful Sandler legacy sequel with Happy Gilmore 2, he might get the opportunity.
There’s also a chance Netflix might make a third Happy Gilmore movie. While it’s not currently being planned, the first two films performed very well on the streaming platform – the original was especially popular leading up to the release of the sequel – proving there’s a large and dedicated fan base. Another movie could be successful, but the filmmakers would need to find the right angle. While Happy Gilmore 2 is one of the best films Happy Madison has made recently, some viewers thought it relied too heavily on inside jokes and references. To avoid repeating that, a third film might benefit from a slightly different approach.
No matter what Adam Sandler film gets made next, the potential Happy Gilmore 2 shows that comedy is still king on Netflix, and that reveals something interesting about how streaming works. While Netflix, Apple TV, and Prime Video have tried to win awards and create big, expensive films in other genres, comedy consistently attracts the most viewers. This makes sense – when people want to relax and watch something at home, a funny movie usually appeals to the most people. As long as comedies continue to perform well, Netflix will keep producing them.
