What made the original show so great was its simple approach to storytelling. It didn’t get bogged down in complicated details, which allowed for fun and imaginative ideas that really appealed to kids. A perfect example of this is the story behind Computron, one of the Autobots’ strongest combined forms.
The Technobots are a unique and unusual team within the Transformers world. Unlike most Transformers, they don’t transform into real-world vehicles, and they don’t have very different looks from each other. But while they might not be visually impressive, their backstory is fascinating – it connects the powerful Dinobot Grimlock to the evil intelligence of Unicron.
The Transformers’ Smartest Combiner Came From Unicron
Computron was first seen in the Transformers episode “Grimlock’s New Brain” from Season 3. However, the character wouldn’t fully come together as the powerful, intelligent being we know until the very end of that episode. After receiving a boost of intelligence through anti-electrons, Grimlock stops wanting to battle and sets off to pursue his own goals.
The Dinobots are famous for being a bit slow-witted but incredibly eager to fight, originally built by Wheeljack based on actual dinosaur fossils. Now, as Grimlock delves deeper into Unicron’s mind, he begins to act more like his creator, becoming the first of the Technobots.
The Technobots, built from parts of Unicron, have officially joined forces as a team to battle for what’s right. But becoming Computron meant Grimlock had to give up some of his intelligence, making Computron the most intelligent of all the Transformers who combine.
It’s ironic that Computron is so powerful, considering his origins. Unicron is usually depicted as an incredibly powerful, almost devil-like figure, especially when compared to the god-like Primus. Plus, giant robots formed by combining multiple smaller robots, like Devastator or Superion, often struggle to function because of conflicting control systems.
Computron is truly remarkable. Built with the body of a robotic demon, he’s uniquely able to make sound decisions instead of struggling with inner conflict. While his origins are dark and unusual, it ultimately proved to be a fantastic addition to the team.
Computron is Still the Coolest Combiner in All of Transformers
Many fans who enjoyed the original Transformers series consider it the best in the entire franchise, and they have a good reason – its villains were large and visually memorable. But there’s a unique appeal to the character Computron, and learning about the Technobots only makes him more fascinating.
It’s already great that the Autobots have a smart combiner like Computron. But what really makes him stand out is that he was created by a character who’s a natural fighter and leader, yet ultimately prioritizes thinking before acting. This interesting combination is a big reason why Computron is such a fantastic Transformer that deserves more recognition.
What really sets Computron apart as the best combiner is its surprisingly dark backstory. It’s easy to miss details due to the fast-paced nature of the story, but the idea that the Technobots were formed from Unicron’s remains is genuinely disturbing. Plus, the theme of self-sacrifice – Grimlock willingly giving up his intelligence for the greater good – makes him a truly compelling character you can’t help but support.
While several Transformers have combined into larger forms, none were quite as impressive as Computron. It’s fantastic that one of the most powerful and coolest combiners is also a team dedicated to doing what’s right.
