The Night Manager season 2 airs major death of [spoiler] in shocking twist ahead of the finale

Another character who helped Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) was unexpectedly killed off in the latest episode of The Night Manager season 2.

This week’s episode followed up on last week’s shocking reveal, confirming Pine was secretly working against Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie) and Teddy Dos Santos (Diego Calva).

Worried about his old enemy resurfacing and determined to prevent another confrontation, Roper immediately called MI6 chief Mayra Cavendish (Indira Varma). He asked her to investigate and neutralize Pine’s allies while he personally confronted Pine himself.

The order ultimately led to the death of Basil Karapetian (Paul Chahidi), a high-ranking MI6 officer and one of the most trustworthy characters this season.

After Angela Burr retired and Rex Mayhew died under puzzling circumstances, Basil took charge of organizing Pine’s newest secret operation.

Basil repeatedly shielded Pine during tense conversations with their boss, Mayra. He knew Mayra was secretly working with Roper to destabilize the government in Colombia. However, he made a mistake by contacting Adam Holywell, one of Mayra’s colleagues.

Mayra’s team finally cornered him at London Bridge station, where they stopped him. However, before they could, he hid his laptop – which contained important evidence – in a close-by store for Angela to pick up later.

Basil was brought to a seemingly ordinary house where his captors brutally beat him, trying to force him to reveal information. Later, he tells Mayra some of what he knows, but it’s not enough to protect him.

“Thank you for everything, Basil, and for the sacrifices you made,” she said, her voice cold. “But like I told you, sometimes difficult choices have to be made. It’s finished.”

As Mayra departs and her associate returns, a gunshot sounds, signaling a shift in the scene. Though the second season of The Night Manager has misled audiences with fake deaths before, this one feels tragically real.

Team Pine faces a huge setback heading into the season finale. The sudden departure of Roxana Bolaños (Camila Morrone) at the end of the latest episode is a serious problem that could jeopardize everything they’ve been working towards.

At this rate, it certainly feels like this Basil won’t be our last painful goodbye.
