Seeing the trailer for ‘2 + 2 = 5’ reminded our editor of a particularly stressful high school math exam (he joked it felt like being fired!). But the film itself is surprisingly accurate and insightful – a documentary that seems to predict the future.

What is the 2 + 2 = 5 trailer about?

As a huge movie fan, I was really captivated by this film. It’s a deep dive into why George Orwell’s writing – especially classics like 1984 and Animal Farm – still feels so incredibly important today. He was way ahead of his time, predicting a frightening future that, sadly, feels all too real now. Director Raoul Peck, who previously made the amazing I Am Not Your Negro, worked directly with the Orwell Estate to create something special. He masterfully blends old footage, excerpts from Orwell’s personal writings, scenes from other films, and current events to give us a fresh look at both the man and just how shockingly relevant his warnings remain.

Peck brings a deeply personal perspective to this subject – he was forced to flee Haiti as a child during the Duvalier dictatorship. He doesn’t simply share information; he offers fresh insights, revealing connections and patterns that might otherwise be missed, and consistently engages and challenges the audience.

With terms like “Big Brother” and “Newspeak” appearing more and more often and sounding increasingly threatening, ORWELL: 2+2=5—narrated by award-winning actor Damian Lewis as the voice of George Orwell—offers a powerful look at the dangers of unchecked power and how easily society can crumble. It’s a story told from the perspective of a historical figure who may hold the answers to our future.

ORWELL: 2+2=5 will be shown in cinemas throughout the UK and Ireland starting March 27th.
