HBO Max Users Have Just 2 Days Left To Stream a Disappointing 2010s Horror Sequel

HBO Max has become a popular choice for horror fans. Since launching in 2020, the streaming service has built up a large collection of great horror movies and shows, including both new favorites and classic films like Night of the Living Dead, The Witch, and Sinister. While the available titles change monthly, HBO Max will be removing one controversial horror sequel from its library in February as it adds new content.

I remember when the first Insidious movie came out in 2010 – it was seriously terrifying and everyone loved it! The sequel, Insidious: Chapter 2, which came out in 2013, wasn’t quite as impactful, but it continued the story of the Lambert family and what happened after Josh saved his son, Dalton. It’s great to see Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne back as Josh and Renai, but unfortunately, it’s leaving HBO Max on January 31st, so I need to watch it again before it’s gone!

Insidious: Chapter 2 Didn’t Live up to James Wan’s Original

While Insidious: Chapter 2 isn’t a bad horror sequel, it didn’t live up to the original Insidious, which is considered a truly frightening and excellent horror film. Critics and audiences had mixed reactions, and its Rotten Tomatoes scores dropped significantly from the first film’s 66% (critics) and 62% (audience) to 38% and 57% respectively.

The sequel suffered from two key problems: a needlessly complicated plot that tried to explain everything from the first film, and a loss of the original’s frightening atmosphere. As critic Jeff Beck put it in his review for Examiner.com, the film “recycles far too much of the first film, turning this into a dreadfully dull ghost story with no chills.” While the movie tried to build on the story and mythology of the original, it ended up feeling overly complex and confusing, revealing too much about the spirit world and losing the sense of mystery. The scares weren’t as effective either; instead of creating a slow-burn, terrifying atmosphere like the first film, the sequel relied on sudden jump scares and a darker, more convoluted storyline.

Insidious: Chapter 2 effectively linked the new story with the characters’ histories, especially fleshing out the Lambert family’s backstory, which made it feel like a satisfying continuation and conclusion to the first film. Patrick Wilson again gave a fantastic and chilling performance. The movie also ensured the franchise would continue, leading to three more films, including 2023’s The Red Door.

Where to Stream Insidious: Chapter 2 After It Leaves HBO Max?

If you’re a fan of horror, don’t miss your chance to watch Insidious: Chapter 2 on streaming! It’s leaving HBO Max and isn’t currently available on any other major streaming services. It also doesn’t seem to be coming to any other platforms in the near future. After January 31st, you’ll need to rent or buy the movie online if you want to watch it.
