LEGO SMART Play Star Wars Sets: Everything You Need to Know Before Pre-Ordering

As a huge Star Wars and LEGO fan, I’m so excited about the new SMART Play sets! LEGO just announced eight new Star Wars sets that you can pre-order right now from LEGO’s website, Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. What’s really cool is that these aren’t your typical LEGOs – they react to how you play with them, making sounds and giving feedback. And the best part? You don’t need any apps or screens to make them work! It’s all about hands-on fun that feels a little more magical. I’ve always wanted my X-Wing to sound like it’s flying, and now it can! They’re shipping on March 1st, so check them out if you want to level up your playtime.

How LEGO’s SMART Brick Technology Actually Works

The SMART Brick is a rechargeable LEGO piece that brings your builds to life with built-in sensors and speakers. It can detect movement, tilting, and other nearby SMART Bricks. For example, when you move an X-Wing, it makes engine sounds, and pulling a lever triggers blaster effects. It adds interactivity to your LEGO creations without needing any extra gadgets – it’s like giving your LEGO Star Wars sets a boost of energy!

LEGO’s SMART Minifigures and Tags allow the brick to understand what’s happening in play. Each Minifigure has a unique identifier, so the brick can tell who’s in the cockpit, like Luke Skywalker versus R2-D2, and react accordingly. Flat tiles, called SMART Tags, identify different parts of the model – like fuel, weapons, or communications. Changing these tags, or combining them with actions, causes the brick to respond in different ways. This technology uses built-in tags and motion sensors, meaning no Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or apps are needed. The model itself recognizes the play and responds directly.

Three All-in-One Sets That Include the SMART Brick

To get the most out of SMART Play, you’ll need one of our special bricks. Every All-in-One set includes a rechargeable SMART Brick that provides power for everything.

The Red Five X-Wing from Luke, priced at $89.99, is the perfect starting point for the SMART Play system. It comes with everything you need, including a rechargeable electronic brick, Luke and R2-D2 minifigures, and several interactive tags. The brick easily fits inside the X-Wing, creating realistic engine sounds when you move it and firing sounds when you pull the lever. This set also connects to other compatible sets, letting you add to your collection with less expensive expansion packs that don’t require their own electronics.

The Throne Room Duel & A-Wing set is the largest and most feature-packed option, costing $159.99. What sets it apart is that it includes two interactive ‘SMART Bricks’. This is the only set that allows you to activate multiple features at once. One brick brings the Emperor’s throne room to life with sounds and music when you move Palpatine’s chair or stage a lightsaber fight. The other brick is built into the A-Wing starfighter, providing audio responses to movement. Because each brick can recognize different minifigures and tags, players can enjoy multiple storylines at the same time.

Darth Vader’s TIE Fighter is a more affordable option at $69.99. It comes with one SMART Brick and is designed mainly for playing with the vehicle itself, rather than creating detailed scenes. This single brick cleverly combines motion sensing, sound effects, and the ability to recognize characters. Plus, as you collect more compatible LEGO sets, you can use this same brick to power them all!

Five Compatible Sets That Extend Your SMART Play Universe

These sets don’t come with the smart brick; they’re made to be used with the electronics you already have from your All-in-One kit. They’re like add-ons that let you expand your play with new characters, vehicles, and things that react to what you do.

When connected to a SMART Brick, you can activate features like lightspeed jumps, laser fire, holochess, and lightsaber training. Each action is accompanied by realistic sound effects, making the Falcon feel incredibly authentic.

It comes with minifigures of Obi-Wan, Greedo, a Sandtrooper, and two members of the cantina band. Plus, it includes three special tags that create sounds like a Dewback’s call, karaoke effects, and the noises of drinks being mixed – and yes, it probably plays the cantina band’s famous song!
