Disney is still making Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and the director of the first three films has discussed what’s next for the series. The franchise began in 2003, and Disney chose Gore Verbinski, fresh off the success of the 2002 horror film The Ring, to direct. Verbinski went on to direct the original trilogy: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006), and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007). While two additional Pirates of the Caribbean films have been released since then, Verbinski hasn’t been involved.
Director Gore Verbinski recently told Screen Rant that he doesn’t plan to direct any future Pirates of the Caribbean movies. While wishing the franchise well, he explained that he feels he’s already explored what he wanted to with the series after directing three films. He believes a project loses its spark once you’ve mastered it, and with limited time and endless story possibilities, he’s ready to move on. “I feel like I did three and, for me, it was a great opportunity to learn and to try something,” he said. “I think we have to be at a place where the wheels are about to fall off… There’s just so little time, and there are so many stories to tell.”
It’s interesting to note that director Gore Verbinski hasn’t been as prolific since finishing his work on the Pirates of the Caribbean films. While Rango did well in 2011, his next film, The Lone Ranger, wasn’t a success. After that, he only directed one film, the little-seen A Cure for Wellness, before now. His latest movie is just his fourth directorial project in over fifteen years.
What is Next for Pirates of the Caribbean?

Although director Gore Verbinski won’t be involved in future Pirates of the Caribbean movies, the series will continue. There’s also good news for fans of the original films: Johnny Depp might reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney stopped working with Depp in 2016 following accusations of domestic abuse made by Amber Heard. But after Depp won a defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2022 – where he proved her statements about their relationship were false – he’s gradually returning to acting.
After a break from major American films, Johnny Depp is back with Marc Webb’s Day Drinker, and he’s also committed to Ti West’s upcoming movie, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol. Although Disney is likely watching public reaction to Depp’s return after the recent trial, he’s moving closer to potentially reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
