It’s been 27 years since The Phantom Menace premiered, and I still vividly recall the anticipation. I remember waiting in long lines to see it, not knowing what to expect from the first new Star Wars film of my life. Today, it’s hard to imagine a time before social media and online advertising, but back then, finding out about movies was different. I had practically memorized the trailer from watching it on TV over and over, and I was especially thrilled to finally see the new character, Darth Maul.
Darth Maul was a truly memorable character. His striking, menacing appearance and the unique double-bladed lightsaber – something I’d only seen in Star Wars comics previously – made a huge impression. Lucasfilm was smart to feature him heavily in the movie’s promotion, even if his screen time ended up being relatively short. Those six minutes were enough to establish him as an iconic Sith Lord, and I specifically remember online fans debating just how powerful he was compared to Darth Vader.
I Totally Think I’m About To Find Out
Twenty-seven years ago, a fight between those two characters was just something fans imagined. While some comic books briefly showed it happening (though those stories weren’t considered official), most people had to rely on fan-written stories to see it. That’s because, officially, Maul was dead. But even George Lucas decided that was a mistake, and he brought Maul back to life in Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I’ll admit, I didn’t immediately understand it – I didn’t have access to the show when it first aired, so I didn’t see Maul’s return for a couple of years.
Darth Maul is getting his own TV series! Titled Maul – Shadow Lord, the show takes place during the Empire’s rule, meaning we’ll see him operating at the same time as Darth Vader. A new trailer reveals Maul is being pursued by the Inquisitors – dark side Force users who work for Vader. The trailer is visually stunning and suggests incredible possibilities for the story. Could we finally see a showdown between Darth Vader and Darth Maul, especially since Vader often steps in when the Inquisitors fail?
The show Star Wars Rebels came close to featuring a battle between Darth Maul and Darth Vader, bringing them together on the planet Malachor. However, the story prioritized the powerful emotional reunion between Ahsoka and her former master, so the duel never happened. Also, the Maul in Rebels was older, weakened by lack of nourishment, and wouldn’t have been a worthy opponent for Vader. Now, we’re seeing Maul in his prime – a strong and dangerous dark side user who easily defeats Inquisitors and might actually stand a chance against Darth Vader.
After 27 years, a storyline I’ve always dreamed of for Star Wars – something fans have often imagined themselves – might actually come true, and I couldn’t be more thrilled.
