Though the original Stranger Things series concluded on Netflix last year, the story isn’t over. A new spinoff is in the works, offering a fresh adventure within the same universe. After five seasons and a dramatic finale, fans and the creators, the Duffer Brothers, felt there were still stories to tell, leading to this exciting new direction for the franchise.
A new animated series called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 bridges the gap between seasons 2 and 3 of Stranger Things, bringing the core group back together for a unique adventure. This series explores an idea the creators, the Duffer Brothers, had during the main show but didn’t have time to fully develop. Netflix has released a trailer and announced the animated spinoff will premiere on April 23rd. You can watch the trailer below.
What Is Stranger Things: Tales From ’85?
Later this year, Netflix will release Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, a new series that has fans curious about what’s in store. The creators of the original Stranger Things, Matt and Ross Duffer, are executive producers, along with Hilary Leavitt (Upside Down Pictures) and Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen (21 Laps). Eric Robles is the showrunner and also an executive producer. The animation is being handled by Flying Bark Productions, known for their work on shows like What If…? and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur.
I’m so excited about the new animated Stranger Things series! It’s going to be amazing to see the characters reimagined with a fresh voice cast – Brooklyn Davey Norstedt as Eleven, Jolie Hoang-Rappaport as Max, Luca Diaz as Mike, Elisha “EJ” Williams as Lucas, Braxton Quinney as Dustin, Benjamin Plessala as Will, and Brett Gipson as Hopper. The Duffer Brothers said this was one of the first ideas they had when they started thinking about expanding the Stranger Things universe, which is really cool. They also hinted that this might be the only spinoff we get, so I’m definitely going to savor it!
Will Stranger Things Get More Spinoffs?

While Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 is the first spin-off series, it could be the last one to include the show’s original characters. The creators, the Duffer brothers, have hinted that future live-action spin-offs will explore different parts of the Stranger Things universe rather than continuing the story of the Hawkins group. Last year, the Duffer brothers told The Hollywood Reporter that this marks the end of the story for these characters and the Upside Down as we know it.
The Duffers explained that while they’re developing new stories and spinoffs within the Stranger Things world, this animated series might be the only one to continue the adventures of the original characters. If the show does well, there’s a possibility of revisiting these characters in future installments, which is something they’re open to.
