Coronation Street and Emmerdale dropped from ITV tonight in schedule shake-up

ITV has cancelled tonight’s episodes of both Coronation Street and Emmerdale, a short time after introducing its new hour-long block of soap operas.

Last month, popular serial dramas shortened each weekly episode by half an hour to allow them to air every weeknight at 8pm. This change came after a special, much-awaited crossover episode – nicknamed ‘Corriedale’ – where the storylines of the two shows merged for a single night.

It’s happened before: Corrie and Emmerdale have had their broadcast times changed to accommodate other shows, and this time, the TV schedule was adjusted just a week after the new pattern began.

Tonight (3 February), they are replaced by coverage of the EFL Cup.

The second leg of the Arsenal vs. Chelsea semi-final will begin at 8pm. Mark Pougatch will provide pre-match analysis from the Emirates Stadium starting at 7:30pm.

Good news for fans: Coronation Street and Emmerdale will be back on Wednesday at their regular times. However, there will be some changes to the schedule on Thursday because ITV will be broadcasting the France versus Ireland Six Nations match live.

Following the announcement of ITV1’s updated schedule, Kevin Lygo, ITV’s head of Media and Entertainment, explained that the changes are based on what viewers want. With ITVX already offering more viewing options than ever, they aim to deliver popular shows in a way that’s easy to enjoy.

With so much competition for people’s attention and constantly changing viewing habits, we think this episode length is perfect for fans to stay up-to-date with the show without it feeling like a commitment.

Emmerdale actor Chris Bisson recently spoke with Leeds Live on the red carpet at the Corriedale launch about the upcoming schedule change. He explained that fans have long hoped for a crossover between the two shows, and it’s now happening as ITV launches its new ‘soap power hour’.

Look, I’ve heard the complaints about Coronation Street‘s schedule being messed with due to football matches, and honestly, it’s over. The powers that be have finally sorted it out! From now on, you can reliably tune in every single day of the week from 8pm to 9pm. No more confusion, no more missed episodes – it’s a simple, consistent schedule, and that’s a huge relief for fans like me.

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 8pm on ITV1. Coronation Street follows at 8.30pm. Stream on ITVX.
