Should Sam Raimi send help?
Sam Raimi is a fantastic director. He’s created iconic horror series like The Evil Dead, delivered hugely enjoyable films with his Spider-Man trilogy, and made impressive standalone movies like A Simple Plan and Drag Me to Hell. His film Drag Me to Hell feels particularly similar to Send Help, sharing its blend of shocking moments, effective scares, and unpredictable plot twists.
Send Help here….
The story begins with typical office drama, focusing on Linda, a diligent employee who unintentionally rubs her colleagues the wrong way. She believes the company president has promised her a promotion, though this seems unlikely given her current position. However, her hopes are dashed when the president dies and his entitled son, Bradley, takes over, making it clear she won’t be getting ahead. In fact, her job is at risk. To appease her, Bradley agrees to take her on a business trip to Thailand, but only if she does all the work and prepares everything for him to present as his own.
When all goes awry
Everything shifts when the plane encounters severe turbulence and crashes – expect some darkly humorous and over-the-top deaths, as this is a Sam Raimi film! Only Linda and a badly injured Bradley survive. Suddenly, the power dynamic changes; Linda, whose survival skills were dismissed during her ‘Survivor’ audition, steps up to build shelter, find food, and care for Bradley on the island. Throughout the film, this power balance shifts back and forth, creating a lot of entertaining and surprising moments.
So……….?
Okay, let me tell you, Rachel McAdams and James O’Brien absolutely kill it in this movie. The script is really clever and director Sam Raimi throws in all his signature style – and yes, that includes a bit of the over-the-top gross-out humor he’s known for, like you might remember from Evil Dead 2. It’s a weird mix, funny and disgusting at the same time! But honestly, Send Help works. It’s got horror elements, it’s trying to say something about life, but most of all, it’s just a blast to watch.
