With so much excitement around Grand Theft Auto 6 – and marketing starting this summer, according to Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick – it’s easy to overlook last year’s releases. For example, sales of Gearbox Entertainment’s Borderlands 4 weren’t as strong as the company had hoped, though official numbers haven’t been released.
Following the delay of the Nintendo Switch 2 version, questions have arisen about the game’s overall future, despite recent plans indicating a 2026 release. In an interview with GamesIndustry, Strauss Zelnick stated that support for Borderlands will continue, with new content and updates planned, and expressed ongoing confidence in the title.
During Take-Two’s recent earnings call (as reported by GamesRadar), president Karl Slatoff announced that Gearbox Software plans to keep adding new content and updates to Borderlands 4, and they anticipate strong sales for the game over time.
This information confirms what we already knew, but we’re curious about future content plans. Will Gearbox release the planned Bounty Pack and two story expansions as scheduled? And can players expect even more content after the third quarter of 2026?
Players who own the Standard Edition of the game can look forward to new, high-level Pearlescent items arriving next month. Following that, a challenging new Invincible boss and the first Takedown event are planned for sometime in the second quarter of 2026. Gearbox is also working on making the game run better, raising the level cap, adjusting gameplay balance, adding new things to do after finishing the main story, and running special, temporary events. Plus, they’re adding a feature many players have asked for: Shared Progression, which lets progress carry over between characters.
This feature means that once you unlock something like Fast Travel points or Vault Key Fragments during your first game, it will stay unlocked for all your future characters. You won’t have to find these collectibles again. We don’t have a release date for this update yet.
