Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s daughter is a fighter.
The singer of “Jealous” shared a heartfelt account of the scary first moments after their daughter, Malti Marie, was born prematurely in January 2022.
The singer revealed in a February 4th interview on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast that her daughter’s birth was quite complicated, something she hadn’t previously discussed. They had originally expected the baby to arrive in April, but received news that she would be born earlier. As a result, they quickly prepared for her arrival, and she was born via surrogate.
When we arrived at the hospital, our daughter was born weighing just one pound, eleven ounces. She was almost purple! The incredible nurses in the NICU immediately stepped in, resuscitated her, and quickly provided all the necessary care, including intubation.
Nick, age 33, shared that he and Priyanka took turns working 12-hour shifts at the hospital to care for their daughter, Malti, who spent her first three months receiving treatment and fully recovered after receiving around-the-clock care.
Nick, who married Priyanka in 2018, explained that she struggled for three and a half months, but gradually started to recover and gain weight. After receiving six blood transfusions, her condition improved enough for them to bring her home.
Still, four years later, Nick has memories of Malti’s time of recovering in the hospital.
He said he could still faintly smell it. There are always strong, emotional experiences in situations like that. Being there every day was both reassuring and scary, especially seeing other families facing similar challenges.
Today, the “Close” singer’s daughter exhibits the same strength she showed previously.
Oh my gosh, you can just tell she remembers being born, like she understands what that first part of her life was like. It’s incredible! Every single day is a total blessing to her, and honestly, you can feel it radiating from her. She approaches everything with this amazing excitement, it’s just… breathtaking!
Honestly, I’m just captivated by her. He said she probably doesn’t consciously remember much, but I feel like deep down, on a soul level, she knows she’s touched so many lives and feels grateful. I just think she’s an amazing person, truly incredible.
For Nick, seeing Malti live out her toddler years has been an emotional blessing.
Overcome with emotion, he described his daughter as extraordinary, saying she felt like “magic.” Just four years old, he’s amazed by her potential and feels incredibly lucky to watch her grow, believing she’s destined for great things and is simply perfect.
