PS5 Stocks Will be Unaffected by RAM Shortages Until End of 2026’s Holiday Season

Recent shortages of memory chips have impacted many hardware releases, including Valve’s Steam Machine. However, Sony has announced that PS5 production won’t be affected for now. According to Sony CFO Lin Tao, during an earnings call, the company has secured enough memory to continue manufacturing PS5 consoles at least through the end of the 2026 holiday season.

Although the future remains unclear, Sony’s Tao has stated they are still working with memory suppliers to guarantee they can meet customer demand. To offset any potential losses, Sony intends to earn more from its existing PS5 owners through things like network services and software, and by expanding those revenue streams.

Sony announced during their recent earnings call that they’ve sold over 92 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally. Remarkably, this means they’ve already surpassed their initial sales target of 90 million units by the end of 2025, a goal first mentioned by Tao in November.

As a big fan, I was really excited to hear what’s planned for next year! Apparently, the main goal right now is to make a splash during the holiday season and get the game into as many hands as possible. They’re aiming for 90 million players by the start of next year, which is awesome! It sounds like they’re really focused on building a huge community.

Sony reported strong software sales, exceeding 97 million games sold on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. A significant portion of these sales – 13.2 million – came from games developed directly by Sony, including titles like this year’s Ghost of Yōtei and Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.

A recent report showed that the PS5 Pro is projected to make up about 13% of all PS5 sales in the US during 2025. The PlayStation Portal handheld has also done well, with around 2 million units sold. Given that 27 million PS5 consoles were sold in the US that year, this means about 7% of PS5 owners also purchased a PlayStation Portal.

Okay, so it sounds like getting a PS5 isn’t too bad right now, but things could get tricky with the PS6. Apparently, one analyst, David Gibson from MST Financial, is saying the PS6 might be delayed a lot longer than most of us are expecting. It’s a bit of a bummer, honestly, but good to know so I can adjust my expectations!

So, I was hearing that both the new PlayStation and the new Xbox were supposed to drop in 2027. But now it sounds like they might be delayed – at least a year, maybe more. Apparently, there’s a big shortage of memory chips, and until the price of RAM comes down, Sony and Microsoft are holding off on launching the consoles. It’s a bummer, but I guess they want to make sure everything’s solid before they release it.

According to a report from October, Sony has completed the design for the PlayStation 6. The console will use a new AMD processor, internally called Orion, and consume 160 watts of power. This processor will have 8 main CPU cores (Zen 6C) and 2 energy-saving cores. The graphics will be handled by a GPU with 54 RDNA5 processing units running at speeds between 2.6 and 3 GHz. The processor’s design allows developers to utilize 7 out of the 8 cores, keeping one core in reserve as a backup.
