The 2025 film Superman, directed by James Gunn, was a major success and breathed new life into DC’s movies. While fans loved the fresh take on Superman himself, many were also captivated by Nicholas Hoult’s performance as Lex Luthor. People are already hoping to see him reprise the role in the next film, Man of Tomorrow. If you enjoyed Hoult’s work in Superman and can’t wait for the sequel, he has a great body of work, including a little-known sci-fi romance that’s definitely worth watching.
The 2015 film Equals features Nicholas Hoult as Silas, a man living in a future world where emotions are suppressed and considered an illness. His life changes when he meets Nia (Kristen Stewart), another resident who, like him, begins to experience feelings. Also starring Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver, the movie didn’t receive rave reviews, but it’s still enjoyable thanks to its unique visual style and Hoult’s acting. You can now watch it for free on Tubi as of February 1st.
Equals Has a Similar Story to Many Dystopian Sci-Fi, But Leans More Into Romance Than Most
The basic idea behind Equals – a society where emotions are forbidden and seen as an illness – isn’t groundbreaking. We’ve seen similar concepts before, notably in the film Equilibrium and novels like Lauren Oliver’s Delirium series. However, Equals distinguishes itself by concentrating on the personal story of Silas and Nia, and Silas’s struggle with his awakening emotions and the risks of discovery. Unlike many dystopian stories that center on oppressive governments and rebellion, Equals is a more intimate, character-driven experience.
I’ve been thinking about the film Equals lately, and what really struck me was how its intimate focus on just a few characters is actually more compelling than those huge, epic sci-fi rebellions you often see. Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart are fantastic – they play people in a world where emotions are suppressed, and watching them cautiously navigate feeling again, and falling for each other, feels so genuine. Honestly, Hoult’s reactions as Silas, especially during a couple of key twists, are truly brilliant. Now, I won’t say it’s a perfect film – some of the criticism about the pacing is fair, and it does remind you of other stories exploring similar ideas. But it’s a really interesting sci-fi that I think got overlooked, and with it now streaming free on Tubi, it’s a great time to finally give it a watch.
