Death in Paradise’s Selwyn faces one of his most daunting challenges yet – but there could be a silver lining

Season 15 of Death in Paradise brings back a familiar face – Commissioner Patterson – but it’s unclear if the island of Saint Marie is ready for his return.

Once he returned to the island and resumed his duties, he realized things had changed significantly.

I was really hooked by this scene! It starts with Selwyn getting ambushed by a tabloid reporter, Anton Busette, right outside the yacht club – the guy even shows him a preview of a nasty article he’s writing. Then, Selwyn confronts Catherine, and she doesn’t pull any punches when he asks why everyone in town suddenly seems to be turning on him. It’s a tense moment, and she really lets him have it!

He sighed, wondering if this was all the gratitude he’d get after everything he’d done for the island. He then realized his friend had stopped speaking.

The people here fought to get your job restored, and you just left without saying a word – it felt like you didn’t care at all. Now, after all this time, you’re acting like everything is normal.

Selwyn immediately assures everyone he still has feelings for Saint Marie, and believes Catherine understands this – but she doesn’t hesitate to tell him otherwise.

And after some deliberation, Selwyn comes up with a plan of action…

He immediately countered Anton’s claims by issuing a statement accepting full responsibility for what he had done.

He admits it was painful to realize his connection to the island was gone, but he understands he brought it on himself.

Selwyn announced a new plan, working with his team and Catherine, to regain the community’s trust. We’ve already seen early signs of this effort in his conversation with local fishermen.

The preview shows Selwyn leading a town hall meeting, where residents voice their long-held concerns and challenging questions to him.

It’s highly likely he’ll regain their support, but it won’t be easy. Selwyn is finally realizing how much harm his departure caused, and the process will likely be difficult and humbling for him.

As the saying goes, truly valuable things require effort. There’s a good possibility Selwyn’s connection to the island will become even stronger, and that he’ll return as a more effective leader and a better person.

Don Warrington hinted that his character is returning with a fresh outlook and a changed approach to life on the island. He described the character as essentially ‘remade,’ suggesting a significant personal transformation.
