Will there be Betrayal season 2?

*Warning – contains spoilers for all four episodes of Betrayal.*

In Shaun Evans’s new show, Betrayal, he stars as John, a spy for MI5 who is facing difficulties in his personal life and at work. All four episodes are currently streaming on ITVX.

The thriller features Romola Garai and Zahra Ahmadi alongside the lead actor, telling the story of John as he discovers a dangerous plot within the UK connected to a radical group from the Iranian government.

The first season wraps up this particular story, but John and Claire are left wondering what the future holds for their working relationship. Will the show continue, allowing us to see how they navigate this and follow John on a new adventure?

Will there be a Betrayal season 2?

It’s currently unclear if “Betrayal” will be renewed for a second season. While the first season’s storyline reached a natural conclusion, there’s still potential for John to continue solving cases while also navigating his personal life and marriage.

We really aimed to create a focused, four-episode series – something lean and impactful, with no wasted moments and a truly compelling story. The idea was to put it out there and see if audiences connected with it enough to want more. If they did, we’d definitely get the team back together and explore if there was enough material to build on.

It wasn’t about creating a system designed for endless growth. I believe that approach is destined to fail and feels rather exploitative.

When would a potential Betrayal season 2 air on ITV?

Now that the first season is out, making a second one would likely be faster. However, since the creator hasn’t announced any immediate plans for a continuation, it will still take time to develop the story and write the scripts.

A release in 2028 seems probable, or possibly as early as late 2027. Ultimately, we’ll need to wait for an official announcement.

Who would return to star in a potential Betrayal season 2?

If Betrayal gets a second season, Shaun Evans would almost certainly reprise his role as John Hughes, and Romola Garai would likely return as his wife, Claire.

It’s possible we’ll see John’s coworkers again in season 2, like Mehreen from Zahra Ahmadi and Simone played by Nikki Amuka-Bird, but right now, it’s just guesswork.

Here’s a complete list of the main characters likely to be back if Betrayal gets a second season.

  • Shaun Evans as John Hughes
  • Romola Garai as Claire Wardly
  • Zahra Ahmadi as Mehreen Askari-Evans
  • Nikki Amuka-Bird as Simone Grant
  • Gamba Cole as Rudy Kember
  • Matthew Tennyson as Greg Taylor
