Production is now starting on the God of War TV series for Prime Video. Ronald D. Moore, known for Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind, is leading the project as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. Recent weeks have seen a lot of excitement around the cast, with Mandy Patinkin confirmed to play Odin and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) as Thor. Most notably, Ryan Hurst, who starred in Sons of Anarchy and voiced Kratos in the God of War video game, will play Kratos in the series. Now, a key element of the show has finally been put into place.
Prime Video announced today that Callum Vinson will play Atreus, Kratos’s son, in their upcoming series. Atreus is a key character in the games the show is based on, with a compelling story of his own. While the casting of Callum Vinson might not generate as much buzz as the announcement of Kratos’s actor, Vinson has demonstrated his acting ability and can convincingly portray intense scenes.
God of War Confirms Callum Vinson as Atreus

Callum Vinson is quickly becoming a recognizable face in television, despite having a relatively new career in acting. He’s known for voicing Piglet in various Winnie the Pooh shows, and he’s appeared in the thriller series Long Bright River and will be in Season 3 of Netflix’s The Night Agent. Horror fans will recognize him from Chucky Season 3, and he’s landed a significant role as young Jason Voorhees in the upcoming Crystal Lake series. Clearly, he’s comfortable with intense and violent roles.
Prime Video describes Atreus as starting his journey in a familiar setting for players of the God of War series. He’s raised in a secluded cabin in the forest with his mother, Faye, and becomes a skilled archer eager to explore the world beyond his home. Similar to the beginning of the 2018 game, the death of his mother leaves Atreus with his stern and reserved father, Kratos, forcing them to embark on a journey of mutual learning and growth.
Fans of the God of War games have observed that the upcoming Prime Video series, which has been greenlit for two seasons, seems to be incorporating storylines from the God of War Ragnarök sequel alongside the events of the original game. It’s currently unknown how the show will blend these two narratives, but a key plot twist regarding Atreus will likely be addressed – we won’t reveal it here, but the series creators are almost certainly preparing for it.
The upcoming God of War series is a collaboration between Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios, PlayStation Productions, and Tall Ship Productions. Frederick E.O. Toye, an Emmy-winning director known for his work on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout, will direct the first two episodes. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
