‘Highlander’ Reboot Set Video Reveals Dave Bautista’s Villain, The Kurgan

Production is moving forward on the Henry Cavill reimagining of , and a recent video from the set offers a first glimpse of sporting a full head of hair as The Kurgan, alongside Henry Cavill’s Connor MacLeod.

After nearly twenty years of planning, a fresh take on the classic sword and sorcery action series is finally in production and progressing well. The film is directed by Chad Stahelski, known for John Wick, and stars Henry Cavill and Dave Bautista alongside a talented ensemble cast including Jeremy Irons, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Marisa Abela, and Max Zhang.

This latest video shows more of Henry Cavill filming with Joe Ironside in London, and riding a motorcycle, following images released last week. While the footage doesn’t feature much action, it’s notable that Dave Bautista’s take on The Kurgan – a role previously played by Clancy Brown in the 1987 film – appears somewhat less intimidating than the original. Of course, we won’t get a true sense of his performance until the official trailer is released later this year.

Dave Bautista is a consistently busy and popular actor, always appearing in the next big action movie. He recently starred alongside Jason Momoa in the successful Prime Video film The Wrecking Crew, and is now joining forces with Henry Cavill for Highlander, which promises to be another exciting action adventure.

Dave Bautista also readily compliments his new colleague, and in a November interview with MovieWeb, the former wrestler shared his strong admiration for Henry Cavill’s dedication and work ethic. He explained:

Henry is truly one of the most dedicated actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. I’ve personally witnessed his intense training, and that’s saying a lot coming from someone with 20 years in professional wrestling – I know what it takes to work hard in the gym. He’s not only incredibly hardworking, but also a genuinely kind person.

The movie Highlander became a cultural phenomenon in the late 1980s, boosted by its impressive effects, a fantastic Queen soundtrack, and many memorable lines. Any reboot faces the challenge of appealing to fans of the original 1987 film, while also attracting a new audience who may not have even been alive when it first came out. Ultimately, the question is whether there’s room for both the classic Highlander and a new version, or if there can truly be only one.
