Margot Robbie Shares Her Honest Take on Jacob Elordi’s Frankenstein

Jacob Elordi is earning praise for his acting, recently receiving his first Oscar nomination for his work in Guillermo del Toro’s film, which earned a total of nine nominations.

I’m so excited for Robbie’s new movie! She told me Guillermo del Toro showed her an early version, and she absolutely loved it – and honestly, that makes me even more hyped. She plays Cathy in the upcoming Wuthering Heights, and knowing she’s a fan of this other project is awesome.

The acclaimed actress explained that Gothic styles are becoming popular again, which she finds really enjoyable. She believes this is because Gothic stories are deeply emotional and visually striking, allowing artists and craftspeople to showcase their talents on a grand scale – and that’s incredibly exciting.

Robbie wondered why filmmakers and their department heads wouldn’t be thrilled with this. “I’m really excited about it,” she said. “I admire the work Guillermo has consistently done, and I’m also loving what Emerald is creating.”

Elordi pointed out that the two movies make a great double feature, as they both explore Gothic themes, but in very different ways.

Robbie rightfully added, “Just a lot of Jacob.”

The highly anticipated gothic sci-fi action drama premiered to rave reviews at the 2025 Venice International Film Festival. It then had a short run in cinemas before becoming available on Netflix on November 7th. The film was a huge success, and director Guillermo del Toro had often called it his passion project.

Critics and audiences both overwhelmingly love Frankenstein, giving it a 85% and 94% approval rating respectively. It’s a ‘Certified Fresh’ and ‘Verified Hot’ hit, and even earned Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Elordi.

“Wuthering Heights” Is Off to a Rocky Start

The new film based on the 1847 novel isn’t a strict retelling of the story, and the filmmakers acknowledge this with the use of quotation marks in the title. Director Emerald Fennell shared with Fandango that the book is deeply meaningful to her and many others. She explained that because the novel is so complex and challenging, a direct adaptation isn’t feasible. She’s not aiming to recreate the book exactly, but rather to offer her own interpretation of it.

She explained that the story she remembered reading felt more like a dream than reality. It was a version shaped by her own desires, filled with events that never actually occurred. That’s the nature of Wuthering Heights – it’s both familiar and not quite real.

The director has collaborated with both actors previously. She had a small part in Barbie, and Robbie produced the critically acclaimed Promising Young Woman. Fennell also directed Elordi in the talked-about film Saltburn. The new adaptation of Wuthering Heights has generated discussion regarding its casting choices – specifically, the decision to cast a non-white actor as Heathcliff, which is seen as central to the character’s suffering – as well as its costume design and emphasis on romance.

Critics generally praised the film, saying the changes from the source material worked well. However, the initial Rotten Tomatoes score is a somewhat disappointing 71% based on 75 reviews. An audience score isn’t available yet, and the critic score will likely change as more reviews are published.

Frankenstein is available to stream on Netflix. “Wuthering Heights” premieres in theaters on Feb. 13.
